Discover Berlin's past and present on an up-cycled bike

Outside many "traditional" guidebooks are places pivotal to the story of Berlin during the 20th century and before. To explore this history for ourselves, and its overlap with the present day, we'll rent up-cycled bikes from a local youth project here in my neighborhood, and then set off on our tour.

First up: Tempelhof Airport — now a gigantic park and symbol of Berlin's open and free culture — once the world's busiest airport during the 1920s before becoming the grand entrance to Hitler's World Capital Germania and later a US military base where American planes delivered supplies to an encircled West Berlin during one of the most tense episodes of the Cold War.

Next, we’ll go from West to East, over the path of the Berlin Wall, to the Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park, a massive monument to the USSR’s fallen soldiers of World War II and one of Berlin's most important remnants from the Communist era.

Stopping at places of interest along the way, our route will take us through one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, settled by Bohemian refugees in the 1730s. Throughout the tour we will talk about how the many different histories of Berlin are represented in each place.

Hi! I'm Matt, a history guide and proud "neu-Berliner" since 2015.

This tour is about experiencing Berlin and its history the way I like to experience it: on a bike! We will get away from the typical tourist areas and instead learn about the city's past by exploring some of the more local places known and beloved by Berliners today.

We rent all of our bikes from a social organisation which teaches bike repair skills to young people, so by taking this tour you're supporting a great cause.

I'll use my degree in history to go over some key facts and events, but mostly we will focus on the experience and inspiration of living everyday life in Berlin surrounded by stories from the past which are constantly hiding in plain sight — and which can offer us important lessons for the future.

Donde estarás

We’ll explore Berlin's history starting in Tempelhof Airport, now one of Berlin's most beloved public spaces and a living symbol of the city's evolution and endurance. We'll discuss Berlin's history of migration in a historic Bohemian village right in the middle of Neukölln, then make our way to the imposing Soviet World War II memorial in East Berlin. As we cross from West to East, we’ll pass one of the many places where the Wall once stood.

Had a great time on this experience. Matthew made the trip fun as well as interesting. He was happy to answer any questions and took us to some of the beaten track places we would otherwise have missed. It was also interesting to hear Matthews perspectives on the various events from Berlins history, which were dealt with truthfully, compassionately and sensitively. All round great tour, and loved the bikes which were up cycled and supporting a youth project, lovely idea.

This was a brilliant bike tour! It was not too taxing physically but at the same time we both felt we'd had a good physical workout as well as a memorable day out. By taking a cycle tour we were able to visit some fascinating places off the beaten track that we would not normally have been able to visit on a short trip to Berlin. There was just the right number of stops on the tour and Matt is obviously passionate about history, has read widely and is very knowledgeable about the history of Berlin. His explanations were thorough and informative. He examined both sides of the clash between fascists and communists and how this came to a head in Berlin and emphasised how history is so relevant to our present day experience of the world. We stopped half way (perfect timing) for a coffee and delicious slice of carrot cake at a local cafe, which was very welcome.
