In this workshop you will learn traditional, contemporary and experimental woodcut printmaking techniques. I will begin by performing a basic demonstration on woodcut printing methods while briefly discussing what a print is and its place in art history. After this brief explanation we will begin collaborating on creating your very own woodcut print. This workshop does not provide enough time to carve a woodblock. However, you will be able to choose from dozens of pre made images and designs that will be combined to create your own hand made print. You can choose your own colors and decide if you want to make an abstract work of art or use my library of images. Most importantly you will be able to rely on my expertise to ensure you leave with a work of art that reflects your taste as well as my high standard of craftsmanship. I am easy to work with and unpretentious so you can get your hands dirty or let me do all the work while you make the choices. If time allows and depending on the number of people in the group we can make more then one print and experiment with other materials.
I'm a professional artist specializing in woodcut printmaking and I've been developing my technique for over 20 years. I was born in Mexico and was deeply influenced by the rich mixture of pre-Colombian and European culture as well as the many Mexican artists that my parents exposed me to. I moved to Philadelphia to pursue my masters degree in printmaking at Tyler School of Art and have since then exhibited my prints all over the world. Early in my career I studied and completed printmaking projects in Italy and Spain and love meeting and learning from people from other cultures. I have a passion for sharing my process and believe art making and craft should be accessible to everyone.
We will conduct our workshop in my studio located in the bustling 1241 Carpenter Studios building near the Italian Market. A converted industrial building housing over 50 artists and small businesses. My location on the third floor provides a unique and must photograph view of the south facing Philadelphia skyline. After a long printing session you'll be able to have your choice of great Vietnamese or Mexican restaurants just a few blocks away.
