You'll learn about what makes a public space work, using my methodology. This will be a 2hrs experience during which we will explore an East End neighbourhood and its’ 3 prominent parks / public spaces. We will do some walking, intertwined with engaging conversations and relaxing time at remarkable public spaces.

After grabbing a coffee or tea from the modern Impact Kitchen, we will start our exploration at the Underpass Park - a unique space built under the controversial, deteriorating, Gardener highway ramp. This space has become a colorful artful spot ideal for urban photos, as well a community place with playgrounds, skate park and basketball court. We will walk along the park to the Sackville Playground, a green oasis encouraging creative play, tucked in the hustle and bustle between a highway and the busy streetcar route. We will pass by the newly developed Front Street Promenade with sculptures and talk about art and development in the city as well as the neighbourhood past and current. Making our way to the Corktown Commons - a magical urban park with wetlands, nature-inspired playgrounds and a breathtaking city view.

One of my mandates is to encourage parents and kids as well as dog owners to derive more joy and better bonding experience while exploring these accessible, inclusive, and, simply, beautiful spaces.

I am a multidisciplinary thinker, and designer as well as an avid urbanist at heart. My pet-project, aimed at exploring and analyzing public spaces, brought me to present the Next Generation Public Spaces speech at World Design Summit in 2016. I know that Toronto has many unexplored spaces and I aim to bring people's attention to such gems in my East-end neighbourhood. I believe we should expect more from our public spaces - our communal backyards, and so I want to share some examples of successful ones while explaining what makes them so special.

Illiana's tour was super! She knows her stuff, took us where most tourists don't go, and had a lot of insights. We really had a great time - her husband Sergi and toddler son were there, too - the fact that it was cold out, etc, didn't matter - it was just really interesting.

Iliana was extremely knowledgeable about the topic of tour - public spaces. I have lived in Toronto for many years and yet I didn't know many places and spots that she showed us. It was fun and very insightful! I felt that the things she covered were very unique and very applicable to everyday experiences people have in toronto public spaces. Also, her presentation made me think of things that I don't normally think about when I visit these places like for example, what is this playground trying to achieve? Is it incorporating nature? Is it inclusive to all? What are the materials used here? I have never thought of these things and I appreciate that she opened my mind to them. I definitely recommend this tour who is curious about the city!
