Did you know there was a samurai who devoted himself to his faith in Christianity? Justo Ukon was a great samurai and engineer, and beatified.
While tracking his achievements, we will explore how Christianity effected Japanese society.
Moreover, let’s go up to the hill and see the spectacular view of the town!

Kanazawa is a very traditional town. Since we haven’t had any big earthquakes and war-damage, we can see the layers of history easily. People live in about 200-year-old houses and kids go to a kindergarten right next to a historical spot.
It is the best place for visitors to feel how we adopted foreign culture.

Itinerary:
Meeting at Higashi Chaya Rest House (1min from Hashiba-cho bus stop)
Hike to Mt. Utatsu (Christian Monument, secret valley, observation deck) for about 2hours
Walk to Kenrokuen National Garden and Kanazawa Shrine (the origine of Kanazawa)
Walk to Kanazawa Catholic Church (big stained glass of Justo)
Total excursion ; 8km (5miles) & 4hour

Greetings from another world traveller! I’m a personable licensed tour guide in Kanazawa. I specialize in walking tours, providing cultural insight and explaining what the locals are doing.

Japan is a unique Asian country, developed in the modern sense yet has maintained its cultural heritage. Kanazawa is the perfect size for sightseeing. Join this tour if you’re interested in the old and the new that this city offers. Appropriate for all age groups, mobility issues are OK too as we can take taxis at a very affordable price anywhere in Kanazawa.

It was very interesting. A bit of a long hike up in hot and humid weather. We have learned about Japanese burial treditions, about the Japanese Edo times, the language and Shinto/Budhism religious.

Hard working tour. You need to be reasonably active to take this tour, there are a few hills and steps ! That said, it was a gentle steady pace so we managed to keep up ok. I liked the fact we got to wander off the beaten track and see Kanazawa from a different side. Hanayo was easy going, with excellent English and very witty. She explained a lot about the Christian Samurai period which I was unaware of. We also took in some other places of interest, old style houses and a contemporary museum. Oh, and a Zen garden ! Would recommend this tour if you are looking for something other than the run of the mill touristy stuff

This was a wonderful way to experience some of the nature aspects of Japan. This was an area we would never have encountered without a guide. I felt very at home and at peace wandering through the forest and countryside. The Christian Samurai story was the tread that held it together. Our guide was very outgoing and passionate about the Japanese story and humble enough to listen and include the contributions from the group. We actually went slightly longer than 4 hours as she accommodated the individuals needs amount us.

Hanayo provided us with a unique experience starting in the old Higashi Chaya area and then walking up through the mountain gardens & forests. We would never have found this walk ourselves & we learnt so much from our knowledgeable guide.

Wonderful walk up mountain to hidden shrines, temples and gardens. Saw expansive view over the city. Walked along river. Explored Geisha tea house district. Much of the city is like a garden. All while hearing the story of the Christian Takayama Ukon and the Maeda Clan central to the planning and building of the city of Kanazawa.

Wonderful tour with a story of the history of Kanazawa. Hanayo takes you up the hills to see many beautiful hidden places. We went in May. The gardens were in bloom and very beautiful.
