Discover edible plants & mushrooms with a naturalist

Find out what you can eat in the woods! We'll hike in the lovely Santa Cruz mountains where I'll guide you on a beautiful, quiet 2.5-mile hike in the unique coastal redwood forest. Together we'll learn the ancient ways of identifying edible and medicinal mushrooms, plants, roots, flowers, nuts and seeds (depending on the season). Along the way we'll discuss proper harvesting and preparation techniques while connecting to the beauty and abundance of our ecosystem.

This experience is a fun, hands-on way to connect to what can feed, heal and harm us in the wild. You'll walk away with a whole new appreciation and understanding of nature! The hike is doable for all skill levels. See you on the trail!

I'm a Santa Cruz local, with over 10 years experience as a naturalist. I've traveled all over the world foraging and adventuring outdoors. I turned my passion into a business when I founded Mountain Sea Adventures, an outdoor adventure company connecting people to mother nature. My experience is not manufactured or forced, my routes are uncrowded and peaceful. For me, foraging is a way of life: we make a connection with our natural world through being nourished and healed by plants, mushrooms and trees.

What a great experience learning about nature’s beauty and what it has to offer us in terms of medicinal value, food and necessity. Caitlin is very knowledgeable, deeply passionate and full of life in this arena. I highly recommend this experience from the novice and curious to the ones who know their stuff. There is something to gain and learn from this. I decided on this last minute due to circumstances beyond my control and my love for eating mushrooms. I came out of this with so much more as well as a prolonged hike. (Lol, long story) Thanks Caitlin! I’ll definitely have to check out more of what you have to offer. :)

I learned so much! I highly recommend this experience as I now feel more connected to the plants around me when I hike and less intimidated by trying foraging on my own. Would love to take a longer class!

I’ve never done an Airbnb experience and my goodness was this special! Caitlin was knowledgeable, fun, funny, insightful and wildly experienced on her topics. My sister and I had the privilege of foraging and learning about various ecosystems and TONS of edible foliage. Not long ago, our species used plants as medicine, and Caitlin has encouraged us to resort back to our roots and look closer at (edible) roots! One of the best experiences we’ve ever had in our lives! Can’t wait to look up the other tours and experiences Caitlin and her outdoor adventure company offers. I would highly recommend Caitlin and her knowledge to anyone and everyone. Thank you!

We had a wonderful experience with Caitlin. She is bright, funny and engaging and extremely enthusiastic about imparting some of her knowledge of nature and foraging to her guests. She clearly has a deep understanding of and connection to her subject that is rare to find and we felt lucky to spend a few hours in the woods with her.

I would highly recommend this trip for anyone who want to learn about their natural environment and how the Native Americans lived with their land versus on the land. We have much to learn.
