We will be cycling off the beaten path, exploring how Berlin's complex history has shaped its food, people, and places, making it the vibrant city it is today. I have chosen our food stops to represent tradition, migration, and modern influences. From German classics to Turkish specialties, it is through these foods that you’ll learn about the story of Berlin. We begin our journey near the historic center of Alexanderplatz, where we will talk about the founding of the city and life in medieval Berlin. As we ride away from the center, we will advance through the centuries, learning how a provincial city turned bustling metropolis overnight, only to be ravaged by war half a century later. Our first food stop takes us to a 19th century market hall for an appetizer and welcome drink. Afterwards, we'll continue into Kreuzberg, with its graffiti covered streets, all night parties, and eclectic food scene, it is a neighborhood that defines this dynamic city. I'll explain how the wall affected this area in particular and you'll learn why, today, it is called little Istanbul, before we dig in to some traditional Turkish mezes. Lastly, we'll head into the former East, crossing the river Spree to the neighborhood of Friedrichshain. There we will taste how a young generation of Germans are keeping their traditional food alive.

Hi, I'm Julian, a Berlin based guide, food lover, and historian. I'm originally from Toronto, but I have always been drawn to Berlin, the birthplace of my grandmother. In 2008 I came to study German history and immerse myself in the culture, immediately falling in love with the city's gritty charm. I moved here permanently in 2012 and have been leading tours through Berlin ever since. I am also a certified guide with the Berlin Guides Association (BBS)

Great combo experience of activity (biking) and eating. Saw berlin from a whole different perspective from a bike. Stopped at three very unique places. Left the tour very full. Great food and plenty of it. Come to the tour hungry. Julian clearly loves what he is doing and he has a good passion for Berlin. Learned many new things about berlin and its history, as well as present day berlin. Highly recommend.

Our experience with Julian was fantastic. He was so knowledgeable about Berlin, took the time to explain and answer our questions. He also structured the tour in such a way that told an immersive story for us to understand how people live and lived in Berlin. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone traveling in Berlin.

Julian was a great tour guide, giving both a great overview of the history of Berlin and also the food and how that ties into Berlin’s culture. Biking around Berlin is the best way to see the city and Julian took us to some of the areas that maybe most tourists wouldn’t go to, but have so much interesting culture and vibrancy. It was timed perfectly too, we were biking back into the city at golden hour with the sun setting over the city vista. The food was varied and delicious too! Must have the spaetzel!!

This bike/food tour was fantastic! We had such a great time riding around neighborhoods that we never would of stumbled upon if it weren't for this tour. Julian was knowledgeable and had a vase amount of info about the history of Berlin. Covered many topics and had some delicious food. The biking was easy and really got to see Berlin from a different angle. I highly recommended this tour. Thanks Julian for a great afternoon!

Excellent later afternoon/early evening tour from Julian. We cycled for roughly 12km which sounds a lot but it's all flat and very easy so no need to worry! The tour has a number of stops where Julian talked us through the area (history, current day, changes, the people, what to see/do if you come back etc). All very informative and gives you a good idea of the cities layout. I'd recommend doing this tour early on in your Berlin trip as gives you your bearings. Also it takes you to places you probably wouldn't see otherwise - a few we ended up going back to as we liked them so much. There were 3 food stops, all showing a different side to Berlin (modern day, Turkish and traditional). Beer is included in the first stop and, if you want more, you pay for it separately at the other stops (all reasonably priced). Julian was very personable and tailored the tour/discussions to his audience well. Overall we both enjoyed the tour, felt it was good value for money and would recommend you do it - especially near the start of your trip to Berlin! Robert

I cannot recommend this tour enough. The biking around these very local and less touristy neighborhoods made us feel like locals, all while learning very important parts of history. Of course, we ate and Julian always provided from context around either the history of the building, the food itself or sometimes just some backstory around the neighborhood. Thank you Julian for all of your insight and especially for your friendliness. I look forward to meeting again!”
