Roma, Lazio, Italia

The Monti district is a neighbourhood of art galleries and wine bars. After a long phase of town planning resettlement, the Monti district is today the mecca of tourists traveling to the capital. It is next to the Imperial Forum of Rome and the Esquilino neighbourhood. Close to Casa Colosseum there are the magnificent basilicas of Santa Maria Maggiore and St. Peter in Vincoli. In the latter you can admire the famous sculpture ‘Moses’, by Michelangelo. A short walk will take you to the Coliseum, Fontana di Trevi, the Capitoline Hill, Trajan's Market, the Palatine, Piazza Venezia, the Altare of the Patria (the national monument for the Unknown Soldier), Domus Aurea, the Capitoline Museums, the Exhibition Hall, and many other interesting places.
Part of the Monti district is the Suburra, the ancient neighbourhood of "Sub Urbe" (below the city), where the cellars extend to the Colosseum, and which is situated between the two major roads, Via Cavour and Via Nazionale, near the Termini Station. The roads in Suburra are paved with sanpietrini (rough truncated basalt stones typical of the square of Saint Peter, the cathedral in the Vatican) and the alleyways at night are breathtaking.
The whole neighbourhood revolves around the Madonna dei Monti square, with the characteristic Fountain of Catechumens, which is the main meeting place.
Bars and shops in the area invade the streets without sidewalks, but this also contributes to its charm.
In the Monti district there still exists a network of small traders and craftsmen - carpenters, blacksmiths, and antique dealers - giving the impression that here time has stopped. Monti district is also known for the most famous of vintage markets and has countless shops, art galleries, wine bars, clubs and restaurants. It is a very eclectic neighbourhood, with artists, local residents, tourists, nuns, the Ukrainian church, and the University of Saint Peter in Vincoli.
In 2008 the director Mario Monicelli produced a moving portrayal of the Monti district in the short film “Vicino al Colosseo c’e Monti” (Nearby the Colosseum there is Monti) which was presented at the Venice Film Festival.
