“Fortezza, the Rethymno’s fortress was completed on 1590 and it is the trademark of the city. Built by the Venetians to protect the city from Ottomans’ attacks and pirates’ raids it stands upon the city, on the Palaiokastro hill. Most of the walls and buildings of the fortress are still in good condition and the view from Fortezza is astonishing. Within its walls the visitor will also find the outdoor municipal theatre “Erophili”, where most of the Renaissance Festival’s events take place. ”

Aquarium
“At this huge modern aquarium, you can experience the underwater life of the Mediterranean. A fascinating day out for kids and adults alike, it has 32 vast glass tanks displaying everything from hunter sharks to miniscule seahorses, jellyfish, turtles, lobsters, and octopus, all in beautifully-lit turquoise sea water against a backdrop of rocks, sand, and seaweed. You'll find it at a former American military base in Gournes, 13 kilometers east of Heraklion.”

“ White Mountains’ National Park is the only national park in Crete. It centres around the Samaria Gorge, at an altitude of 1.200m and continues down to Ayia Roumeli, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Along with the surrounding slopes and a number of smaller gorges branching off from it, Samaria Gorge forms the whole of the area designated as a national park, a status that offers protection to over 450 species of plant and animal, 70 of which are endemic to Crete. In the prefecture of Chania, the Samaria Gorge is the longest in Europe (total length 16km), and one of the most impressive gorges in Greece. Visitors can descend into the gorge and walk for about 6 to 8 hours. Even though the path runs downhill it requires strong, comfortable footwear and some degree of physical fitness. But it’s well worth the effort. At the end of the path, swimming, taverna lunches and picnics under a canopy of trees within full view of the Mediterranean Sea all await you.”

Natural Feature
“Exotic beaches with white sand and turquoise water, Stunning beach and lagoon. Voted Number 9 best best beach in the world by Trip Advisor guests the sea water does not exceed 1m in depth, creating a small lagoon, ideal for children. You can easily cross the lagoon in order to reach the opposite site of the peninsula, while carrying your staff with you, because the water is very shallow there. The eastern side of the beach, in front of the lagoon, is well organized and has the most people. There are umbrellas, showers, lifeguards, snack bars and changing rooms. Also, near the beach there is a huge area for parking You can go by car (40 minutes driving ). The road to Elafonisi is narrow and full of turns, but the beauty of the landscape is stunning”

It operated in the Byzantine period (after 961), but flourished during the Venetian period. The Venetians in the 14th century started major projects to facing the problem of siltation, which holds till today.”

Beach
“Preveli with its riverside palm-groves is one of the most famous and beloved beaches in Crete. Its name – and that of the broader region – is taken from the historical monastery nearby, dedicated to St. John the Theologian. A walk on the bank or a pedalo up the river itself through the palms and oleanders and into the gorge is a quite unforgettable experience. At the mouth of the gorge, where the river Kourtaliotis ends in a delta, is the exquisite beach of Preveli. It has pale sands and a stony bottom to the crystalline water. It is a unique sandy beach, beautiful, with a small forest of palm trees that make it look exotic. There is small lagoon before the river reaches the sea. So the visitor who chooses this beach for swimming, has the unique opportunity to swim either in the salty waters of the sea or in the lagoon and river! Also a fantastic experience for the visitor is to walk and climb the river. The palm trees on the banks of the river offer rich shade and the soil is smooth and sandy. Sometimes one could believe that it is in an African oasis. Due to this image and the unusual environment, the beach has been a very popular destination for tourists since the 1970s, when many hippies were built and camped here with hay and palm tree huts. Fortunately this little paradise is not very organized. There is food and drink served, below there is a detailed map of how to get to the beach.”
