“The harbor was built by the Venetians during their colonization in Crete and specifically between 1320 and 1356. It was an important center, serving the Venetian military ships, as well as one of the most important commercial ports of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. In the 16th century, due to a perceived Turkish threat, the harbor was included to the new fortification plans of the city of Chania. A fort constructed next to the entrance of the harbour and enhanced with bastions even on the breakwater. During the period of the Turkish rule, the port continued to be a trade center. Much later, the19th - early 20th century, the largest ships at that time, had to anchor outside the harbor and reach the pier by boat. Thus, the port gradually abandoned and used the large natural harbor of Souda, which serves the passenger and commercial traffic of western Crete until today. On the other hand, the old harbour of Chania hosts small boats and yachts, in its eastern basin. ”

“Lake Kourna is the only lake with fresh water in Crete. It is situated in a magnificent location, just 4km away from Georgioupolis Chania. It is a rather small lake, known from antiquity with the name Korisia. Lake Kournas is a remarkable destination for an afternoon walk or a day trip. The relaxing and beautiful landscape is ideal for nature lovers. In Lake Kournas, there are two fountains with only one of them being visible, especially during the end of the summer: the Eye, as the locals call the fountain. This natural lake was created by the holdback of the underwater that comes from the White Mountains, the resistant rocks and the lie of the natural cavity. Basically, the lake is a huge hollow which is fed from the southeast side with water due to its soil.”

“The most important center of Minoan civilization, Knossos, is built on the hill of Kefalas, surrounded by olives, vineyards and cypresses, is located 5 km south of Heraklion and covers an area of about 15 sq. Km. The selection of the area was based on its strategic location and its natural advantages. It is located between the two rivers Vlihia and Kirata (today Katsambas), with easy access to the sea, but also to the interior of Crete. According to tradition, it was the seat of King Minos and the capital of his state. Knossos was an important city in antiquity, with a continuous life from the Neolithic to the 5th century AD. century and there was built the first important Minoan palace of Crete. This is the most important example of the Minoan civilization, which lived in its prime from 1700 to 1450 BC. The area of the palace of Knossos is connected with fascinating myths, such as the Labyrinth with Minotaur and Daedalus with Icarus. Even in later periods it plays an important role and develops particularly, as in the Hellenistic era.”
