One of Shropshire’s stone circles. It’s believed the stones encircle the witch, Mitchell. She is held there forever because she milked a cow dry and left the villagers of Priestweston to starve.

A range of rocky hills in Shropshire. Beautiful, wild and atmospheric. Home of Shropshire delicacy, the winberry (there are several different spellings) and some say the Devil sits in the rock known as the Devil’s Chair when the mist is down... You can get to the Stiperstones by walking out of the drive and up the road. You are on the doorstep!

Food and drink

This is a delightful pub, which has been run by the same family for many years. You'll find your hosts Phil & Lara Sproson-Jones behind the bar, or one of their lovely staff. It's good standard pub grub and good beer there, and do try the whinberry pie or crumble - it's a local delicacy. They serve food from 12 noon until 9pm every day. Dogs are welcome in the bar, only.

Bronwyn & Nat serve well kept beer and excellent pies (steak & Stilton is my favourite). It’s a beautiful traditional stone built pub with a big wood burner for cosy winter evenings. Opening times vary with the seasons and it’s usually best to give them call if you want to eat. They do Sunday lunch, too.

If you prefer to buy whole foods or organic food, or you need herbs and spices, or nuts…go to this place. They have been selling good quality groceries, organic vegetables and a vast selection of environmentally friendly products since before it was a thing! They also sell fabulous vegan chocolates… To get there, head for Bishop’s Castle and look for the sign just before the left turn to Craven Arms. It’s at Lydham, about 10 miles away. If you are here on a Friday do visit Lydham Market at the village hall. It’s on between 8am and 1pm.

Hignetts have been supplying food and drink for the local area for over 100 years. They sell good quality meat and vegetables, a fair selection of groceries and they do splendid bread and cakes. We always get the bread and cakes we leave for you from there. Do try their GI bread or the Stilton and walnut.

Places of interest.

Unique places to wander around.
It’s the county town! Museums, a theatre, loads of places to eat, drink and be merry. It’s worth a visit. Park up and walk round. We won’t list all the stuff you can see here but a couple of things to mention. Look for the giants currently standing in the university building in Frankwell. You’ll need to pop in to see them and you’ll be welcome and maybe a visit to the Market Hall which is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. There are plenty of independent coffee shops in the town and they serve very good coffees and teas. Restaurants abound, to suit all tastes, vegan & veggie alike. If you're keen on wine - a visit to Tanners is a must and there's a rather fine whisky shop in Wyle Cop, too. If you're a cat fan, there's a lovely Cat Cafe in Mardol. Do try it! There's also a couple of cinemas, a a good sized theatre and a vineyard! Check the separate entry for information about the Market Hall.

A fascinating dip into the history of this little village. There’s plenty of information about the lead mine on interpretation panels around the site and short walks taking you around the whole site. The mine is looked after by Shropshire Mines Trust https://shropshiremines.org.uk/snailbeach/snailbeach.html You can book a tour down the mine but these don’t run very often, so you might need to contact the Trust and check on dates if you want to do this.

Just up the hill, and along the way, is a tiny hamlet. No one lives there now, but 2 cottages have been restored and you can wander round and peer through the windows…if you go into the barn you can listen to local people describing the lifestyle of the people who lived there. It’s remote. In cheerier times there have been events and workshops held there. We hope things will happen there again.

Whilst you're deciding on a trinket to take back to amuse the in-laws take a seat in one of the delightful cafes, or try a chinese dumpling... The market is open from 10 - 4 from Tuesday till Saturday. There are also late night openings at various times during the year. Check the Shrewsbury Market Hall website for details.
