A great place to understand the impact of the eruption of Mt Tarawera back in the 1800's, where the pink and white terraces were destroyed and a whole village was buried alive. They have excavated the site to show the history of the village

A really nicely laid out attraction which is very family friendly. You can see kiwi's- and there is a hatchery too and you may see newly hatched chicks - we saw a 1 day old chick, it was amazing. Native birds, tuatara, trout. Allow a couple of hours. There is a nice playground for the kids , picnic area and cafe. And for those tall enough a water park ride.
