The Ashmolean is the University of Oxford’s museum of art and archaeology, founded in 1683. Their world famous collections range from Egyptian mummies to contemporary art, telling human stories across cultures and across time.
The Ashmolean’s collections are extraordinarily diverse, representing most of the world’s great civilisations, with objects dating from 8000 BC to the present day. Among many riches they have the world’s greatest collection of Raphael drawings, the most important collection of Egyptian pre-Dynastic sculpture and ceramics outside Cairo, the only great Minoan collection in Britain, outstanding Anglo-Saxon treasures, and the foremost collection of modern Chinese painting in the Western world.

Entertainment & Activities
BEST PLACE TO GO PUNTING
For a truley tranquil Oxford experience, on a summers day or evening, take a picnic and a bottle of champagne down to the Cherwell Boat House and hire a punt. (Easiest way to get there is by taxi, about £5 or 25 minutes walk).
Punting is a perfect way to spend a warm day in Oxford.
Go down stream and The University Parks prove to be a popular picnic place. Parsons Pleasure is where the university Dons would traditionally sunbathe nude but is now a secluded picnic area. The Rollers enable you to move your punt overland and down to the lower Cherwell and the town centre, but be ware - hey can be hard work!
Go Upstream, past the “Vicky Arms”, or more sedately, The Victoria Arms, is a beautiful, peaceful Waterland meadow area with an abundance of wildlife. The Vicky Arms offers refreshments and a play area for children to stretch their legs. It's about half an hour’s Pant upstream from The Cherwell Boathouse (a great restaurant for a summer’s evening treat).
Light cafe food and drinks, sandwiches and salads, sweets and ice cream, picnics and Pimms are also available from the Cherwell Boathouse Tea hut, by the riverside terrace.
The river Cherwell offers ideal conditions for punting, rowing, and canoeing. The slow-moving current and exclusion of all powered craft maintains a peaceful environment in which wildlife thrives.
