King Edward park has spectacular ocean views, Norfolk Island pines and a sunken garden usually ablaze of colour. On the southern boundary are the remains of the Shepherds Hill Battery and Gunner's Cottage which were in regular use from 1890 to World War II. King Edward Park also has links with Newcastle's penal past, with the Bogey Hole (or convict hewn ocean bathing pool) at the foot of the eastern cliff face. The Bogey Hole is a must see, rockpool carved from the face of the natural rock.

Fort Scratchley is a Newcastle icon holding a stunning advantage point over the harbour and sea. The site is one of the city’s first commercial coal mine, the Fort you see today was built in the 1880s. The only time its guns were fired was during World War II. Today, the Fort is a historical museum, and its narrow, underground tunnels are fascinating to explore.
