Food scene

Ohana beach café is our favourite stop on a Sunday morning. A flat white and a vegan almond "croissant" is our regular order. Their cinnamon sticks are also delicious and well worth a try. The relaxed vibe and magnificent view make it a must visit.

Salt is a great choice whether you're looking for a meal, coffee or a drink. With great views of the harbour, their menu is contemporary with a varied selection, and the food is excellent. They're currently doing a special in the morning where a coffee is R10 before 9am, so there's little excuse not to start your day off with a stroll into the village.

Our favourite pizza place in Kalk Bay, Satori is incredibly popular with the locals, and so you'd be advised to book in advance to secure a table over the weekend. On Friday evenings the restaurant quickly fills with families and groups celebrating the start of the weekend. The food is great, and the atmosphere is incredibly friendly in large part due to the lovely staff.

Olympia is a Kalk Bay landmark. The bakery is famous for its breads and pastries, and the café on the main road is usually buzzing with visitors. If you're eating at home, it's worth treating yourself and making sure your meal includes something from the bakery.

Nature

If you're interested in exploring the secrets of the coastline, you must take advantage of the tidal pools scattered between Muizenberg and Cape Point. Our local pool is Wooley's, which is between Kalk Bay and Clovelly Beach. There's a walk way from the promenade and under the railway tracks that will give you access to the pool. Cold water winter morning dips are popular amongst the locals.

Neighborhoods

Clovelly is a quiet and safe suburb nestled between the Kalk Bay mountains, Clovelly Golf Course and the Lower Silvermine Wetlands. The Fish Hoek beach is a 1km walk from the cottage through the wetland. A popular route for locals in the mornings and evenings. With one road in and out of the suburb, the streets are quiet and secluded. It's a peaceful suburb disturbed only by the sounds of peacocks and the occasional tee shot from the nearby golf course. The surrounding reserves mean that we are treated to a wide variety of fauna and flora. Porcupines are frequently spotted in the evenings, and during breeding season we ask guests to look out for the endangered Leopard Toads.

As a result of the natural protection the bay provides, Kalk Bay has been a fishing hub for about 200 years. The harbour was built in the early 20th century and helped establish a commercial fishing industry that has been at the center of the community's economy ever since. In 1967 the apartheid government declared Kalk Bay a White Group Area and many of the local fishing families were forced to leave their homes. Nowadays the village is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. A large variety of coffee shops, restaurants and boutique stores are sprinkled along the main road. Pedestrians and cyclists fill the neighbourhood on weekends visiting the quirky shops and art galleries. There's always something new to see in Kalk Bay and repeat visitors are regularly rewarded with new delights. Whether it's the warm smile of local waiter, or a hidden alley filled with quiet little shops. If you're looking to take advantage of the food scene, there are a few restaurants that are local institutions, including Olympia Cafe, Kalky's in the harbour, The Brass Bell, and Cape To Cuba. Each of them has a distinct character and deserves an outing to themselves. For less well-known, but equally good, alternatives check out some of the spots in the remainder of the guidebook.

Consejos para la ciudad

Cómo moverse

Hire a Car

While there is public transport in various sections of Cape Town it is unreliable and is unfortunately not well connected outside of the main centers. To really take advantage of what the Cape Peninsula has to offer you'll need to have access to a car, or make use of shuttle services or taxis. With a car you'll have access to the beaches and mountains and be able to get into the winelands relatively easily.
