Music scene

If you're here over the weekend (Friday or Saturday), Wild Bill's is a must! It's a neighborhood juke joint where you'll hear top notch jamming from local musicians. It's off the beaten track (i.e. not on Beale Street) and in my opinion all the better for it. Get there after 10:30 for the full experience.

If you're in town over the summer months, you can't miss the Overton Park free concert series. The Levitt Shell invites bands from around the world to play at this outdoor amphitheater....for FREE. There are food trucks, beer, space to spread out a blanket for a picnic, and a dance floor next to the stage. Definitely a fun time! The summer concert lineup happens nightly from Thursday-Sunday at 7:30 and run from May through July. For more information, see: https://ilovememphisblog.com/overtonparkshell

Culture

Located downtown at the Lorraine Motel, site of Dr. MLK's assassination, this museum is more of an immersive experience than a classic museum. You'll walk through the history of the Civil Rights Movement, from slavery to the present. Tour guides are expertly trained and available to answer all your questions. Visiting this museum is a highly recommended, sobering experience. Note: the museum is closed on Tuesdays.

This is a cute museum that could be done in 1 to 3 hours, depending on how much of a music buff you are. There's a section where you can listen to albums that is absolutely fantastic. It's a great way to spend an afternoon!

Food scene

Great little breakfast or lunch place literally right around the corner (2 min. walk max). They sell kolaches (savory and sweet), have cheap coffee on one side and BBQ on the other. You can't beat the price or close location.

Excellent taco stand on the corner of Cooper and Central Ave. About a 15 min. walk, 10 if you're fast. It was voted Best Tacos in Memphis and I couldn't be happier that they moved in so close. They even have a covered picnic setup where you can eat there. Highly recommended if you're in the mood for Mexican.

Nice little craft beer setup with a sweet patio. The beer selection is always changing, and it's reliably good. They have light food affair, maybe better for snacking.

This is the place to go if you want cocktails and don't want to drive. They have great deals for happy hour (half off cocktails) which runs M-F 4-6.

Good food any time of the day. It's a beauty parlor turn diner and they have got the aesthetic down just right. It's slightly more expensive (~$20+ if you get drinks with your meal), but definitely worth it if you're looking for a good meal. They're famous for their Sunday brunch and usually have fun specials.
