In Milanese culture one cannot say "Martesana" without the word "pastry" coming to mind. The breakfasts in this area are in fact a guarantee and a joy able to satisfy even the palate of the most difficult gourmands. Here are our favorite addresses to start a walk on the Martesana in the best way.

One of the most beautiful outdoor areas in Milan born in recent times is that of Tipografia Alimentare, right along the Naviglio Martesana at the Ponte Vecchio and Piazza Piccoli Martiri, one of our favorite views of the area. Ideal for a lunch or an aperitif, at Tipografia Alimentare you will find a proposal that always focuses on the painstaking research of a raw material of the highest quality. All accompanied by a careful selection of natural wines. The lunch menu changes every day to focus on the freshness and seasonality of the ingredients. Where: Via Dolomiti, 1 - Closed: Tuesday.

Still near the stretch of the canal where the Martesana crosses Melchiorre Gioia, you have another stop - or rather a stop - for an aperitif. Tranvai is in fact a bar housed inside the historic 1522 tram with a large covered outdoor area in the adjacent part. Ideal for those who prefer an aperitif in a cocktail version that can be accompanied by cutting boards, sandwiches or burgers. In the Tranvai wagon you will not find the Milanese sciura intent on not losing its stop, but an easy, joyful and relaxed atmosphere, ideal for an alcoholic stop with friends or for a takeaway drink. Where: Via Tirano, Via Gianfranco Zuretti, 61 - Closing: open every day

One of the best pizzerias in Milan in my opinion, in the heart of the Isola district. Music in the background always refined, few pizzas on the menu, all special, very relaxed atmosphere, polite and kind service. The pizza is VERY LIGHT, like no other pizzeria in my opinion. Excellent bottled craft beers and organic wines. I prefer an encore pizza to desserts; alternatively some treats at the beginning such as the wonderful anchovies with bread. Two people spend around € 30-35. Open for lunch only on weekends, always for dinner. Where: via Sebenico 21 (Isola)

Typical Milanese cuisine restaurant, managed by the Arlati family for more than 80 years. Typical Milanese cuisine restaurant, managed by the Arlati family for more than 80 years. Nervets, risottos, stews, ossobuchi, minestrone, cutlets and vitel tonnè. Once upon a time, Signora Modesta's plates were for Pirelli workers. With his son Mario came the artists and musicians of a Milan in turmoil. Now with Leopoldo and Giorgia and the proximity of the University and companies, the patrons have become managers and professors. The recipes have been revisited, but their imprint is still the same.

The Martesana, also known as Naviglio Piccolo, is not simply a stream that runs from Trezzo sull’Adda to Milan, in Cassina de Pomm. It is so much more. La Martesana is a storyteller from a past Milan, far from that of today, but who tells us how it became the city we know today. Initially designed for irrigation purposes by order of Francesco Sforza in the mid-fifteenth century, the Naviglio Martesana was enlarged as a project by the Sforza family, who understood its potential. The Martesana was for years a sinuous tongue of water through which the city was supplied with that lifeblood that contributed, brick by brick, to building its present. Today, in the portion of the canal included in the borders of Milan, the Martesana is known for its views, the opportunities for refreshment and meeting, the cycle path that runs along it and which gives a glimpse of that past, while pedaling or strolling in the present. Served by the Gola and Turro metro stops, both on the red line, it has become an easily accessible neighborhood where it almost seems like you can take a trip out of town, without leaving the city limits.

Between Isola and Greco, behind the Central Station, there is a historic district of Milan, the Maggiolina, which includes the residential area known as the Journalists' Village. A walk around here will immerse you in an atmosphere of other times. For lovers of architecture, hidden gardens, squares and fifteenth-century villas, this is one of the most beautiful areas in the entire city.

Isola is a trendy neighborhood characterized by graffiti and narrow streets full of trendy boutiques, organic food and thrift shops. Next to the cozy family-run trattorias are trendy cafes housed in green courtyards, while the informal bars inside the area's former warehouses are frequented by motorcyclists, punks and students.

Bosco Verticale is a complex of two residential tower buildings designed by Boeri Studio (Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca and Giovanni La Varra) and located in the Milan business center, on the edge of the Isola district. The peculiarity of these buildings, both inaugurated in 2014, is the presence of more than two thousand tree species, including shrubs and tall trees, distributed on the façades. This is an ambitious metropolitan reforestation project which, through the vertical densification of greenery, aims to increase the plant and animal biodiversity of the Lombard capital, reducing its urban expansion and also contributing to the mitigation of the microclimate. As evidence of its architectural recognition, the Bosco Verticale was the winner of numerous competitions: in addition to the International Highrise Award, which it was awarded in 2014, the Bosco Verticale was recognized by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat as the «most beautiful and innovative in the world "in 2015 and as part of the" fifty most iconic skyscrapers in the world "in 2019.
