Food Scene

Betram's cafe and courtyard never disappoints! The perfect spot to relax after exploring the village. Serving brunch, lunch or light bites until early evening. Local art work is displayed on the walls and the log burners are always roaring in the autumn and winter months. With the outdoor courtyard being a real sun trap in summer months. The menu is predominately locally sourced and homemade. My favourites are the Craster Kipper pate or coronation chicken ciabatta, perfect with a glass of wine or pint of local ale. Their cakes are delicious if you have room for a slice! You won't be disappointed.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Masons Arms is a great pub with a nice buzzy atmosphere, perfect for a pub meal or drinks. Grab a seat by one of their two fires if you can. The beer garden is the place to head in the summer as it's a real sun trap! It's child friendly too. They don’t take bookings so it’s just a case of turning up for a table. Last orders for food is 8pm!

Parks & Nature

The Farne Islands are a group of islands off the Northumbrian coast, midway between Seahouses and Bamburgh. There's a large colony of Atlantic (Grey seals) and the famous Sea Bird Sanctuary, great for nature lovers! For a perfect day trip I'd suggest catching one of Billy Shiel's Boats to the Farne Islands, for seal spotting, wildlife and birdwatching followed by great fish and chips in Seahouses or Bamburgh. Local Tip: wear a hat or cap if you're going to the Farnes, the birds sometimes peck and often poop!

Over 5 miles of golden sandy beach backed by huge dunes is waiting for you to explore! Reached by turning up a steep road just after the green bridge, you can easily walk there or take the car and park up (for free), then the beach is a couple of minutes’ walk from the carpark. The beach is easily accessible from both Beatrice Cottage and Oriel house. Head to the green bridge at the bottom of Warkworth’s Main Street: Castle street. Walk over the green bridge away from the village. Take the first right up the hill toward Warkworth Beach after the bridge, signposted for the long stay car park & Warkworth beach, a few metres from the brink of the hill you can either turn left which leads onto the coastal path to Alnmouth. Alternatively, keep going along the beach road to beautiful Warkworth beach.

Sightseeing

Warkworth Castle is steeped in history, climb through the castle, learn of the 'Grey Lady' who's spirit is said to walk the castle at night. Look out for the lion shaped badge of the Percy family in the stones. The descendants of the Percy family, the present Duke& Duchess of Northumberland live in Alnwick Castle another great castle approximately 7miles away from Warkworth. After exploring the Castle walk along the River Coquet, if the boatman is there take a rowing boat across to the historic and secluded Hermitage, thought to have been built as a private chapel for the first Earl of Northumberland. There is a great view from the lady Grey keep of Oriel house and even a fridge magnet with Oriel house on at the gift shops.

Shopping

Great place if you've forgotten to buy something, need another bottle of vino or to pick up a postcard. Local tip: avoid the 'bakery' bread, head to the supermarket for fresh baked good or Cabosse the French patisserie shop next door which is fabulous!
