Food Scene

Schatzi's opened in 2015 and is a welcome addition to downtown Poughkeepsie's growing restaurant scene. Its bar features a big menu of great international beers and ales, and robust, well-made food with a homey but modern Hudson Valley flair. It's a great place to socialize and meet travelers and loyal locals...and, it's half a block from our home.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Derby is very possibly the oldest bar in town. Its friendly atmosphere, hardy bar food, personal pizzas, and weekly live music are always a draw. It's just three blocks from our home, and a block up from the train station.

Arts & Culture

The Bardavon is Poughkeepsie's historic old opera house, which was lovingly renovated in recent years. It features A-list acts—everything from David Crosby to Norah Jones, classical music, dance, and noteworthy personalities such as author David Sedaris. The Bardavon also has family-friendly performances throughout the year, as well as holiday fare including the annual Nutcracker Suite ballet. A beautiful venue well worth enjoying.

Shopping

The Hudson Valley is a wonderful place to hunt for thrift items and antiques, in many locations on both sides of the river. We love Simplicity's spacious storefront, loaded with clean, smartly-retro clothes, jewelry, and accessories...and their charming array of furniture, ceramics, and other household desirables.

Essentials

To avoid the high-density traffic on Route 9 South, we head to nearby Hyde Park for an easy-access shopping. The drive is far more pleasant and even a bit nearer. This Stop & Shop has a nice array of fresh produce, including a decent amount of organics as well as a separate health food section. Also, in the same plaza is Liquorama, a very nice liquor store that features some Hudson Valley wins and distillery products, as well as more international brands. Their prices are good and the staff is friendly and helpful. If you like cognac, get a bottle of Planat, our favorite discovery at this store.

Getting Around

We always refer folks to Enterprise. They're efficient and accommodating, and like most Hudson Valley professionals, courteous and friendly. As for transit stops, we're easy walking distance to the Poughkeepsie train station for Metro-North, Amtrak, and the regional UCAT shuttle that runs service between Poughkeepsie and New Paltz, Kingston, and other towns across the river. Local city and county buses are two blocks away at the downtown bus station.

Sightseeing

We love the Apple Bin! Next to their apple orchard, they have a great deli with wonderful fresh sandwiches, quiches, breakfasts, and delicious coffee. You can eat at a picnic table right in the midst of their produce and spice section. They also sell local and regional jams, condiments, and other items, as well as some handcrafted gift items.
