This one is a quick stop on the main road, about half a kilometre down a dirt road, to old Polynesian ruins. Most of the statues are replicas, but much of the land is authentic. The best way to get a good idea is to go with a guide as there aren't many signs, but if you're just passing along your way around the island, it will give you some history.

Sightseeing

When you head to this waterfall, you will notice that there are three others in the same area, all large and beautiful. Currently, only one is open due to rockfalls on the other two trails. They're free to visit and don't deviate much from the itinerary, so it's worth stopping to see if they're open during your visit. Better appearance after rain.

Teahupo'o is one of the most famous surf spots in the world and in surf videos. It is known as the most dangerous station wagon in the world due to the unique combination of size, power and speed, not to mention that it breaks on a coral reef. If you are there at the end of August, you can attend the Tahiti Pro Surf Competition. In case you're not ready to shred this way, you can see from shore with binoculars or take a water taxi from the city of the same name. From there, you'll have to go back a bit to where the island narrows and re-injects into the wider circle. Heading north, you'll pass some roadside waterfalls.

Hiking

It is the third highest peak in Tahiti at 2066 meters high and although it is a challenging and slippery hike, the reward is magnificent. There are sharp gradients and breathtaking views along the way. The trail starts at Le Belvédère restaurant, a fantastic spot for the view, and continues upwards for 5.5 miles. Since low clouds often compromise visibility, it often takes longer, two days, to complete the hike. There are apparently huts along the way, but this is the one that could be best organized with a local guide.

It's supposed to be one of the most famous and beautiful waterfalls in Tahiti, including a bit long but enjoyable hike to get there. Nowadays, you must register your visit to the Town Hall of Papeete before going to this waterfall. Please note that it is only open on weekdays until 5 p.m.

This is where Tahiti really shines. Tahiti's uninhabited interior is full of waterfalls, the famous Vaihiria Lake, incredibly green jungle and jade-colored water. Most people book a 4x4 tour to see this part of Tahiti, as it is not possible to go all the way unless you have a 4x4 vehicle. There are many trails with waterfalls on which you can hike if you feel adventurous, or simply drive as far as you are comfortable and admire the stunning views. The best way to make sure you see everything is probably to book a 4×4 tour (here is a list of the best rated on Tahiti). However, if you know how to drive a stick and feel adventurous, it's fun to do it independently. But do not do them in periods of rain because big risk of flood.

You can walk through the palm forest, admire the lotuses and there are even waterfalls along the trails, which range from 1 to 2.5 km long. Bring insect repellent! This advice applies to all Tahiti.

This trail is in the southernmost part of Tahiti and is only accessible by boat. Taking you along the coast and through the dense, uninhabited jungle to the cliffs of Te Pari, the Te Pari trail is one of the best ways to see what untouched Tahiti has to offer. Along the way, you'll find Vaipoiri Cave, Queen's Basin, lava tubes and even white sandy beaches. Since this is such a rugged adventure, it's best to tackle the Te Pari trail with an experienced guide.
