The business originally opened as a small-scale manufacturer of handmade confectionery and confetti. On 16 April 1865, just a few years after Italian Unification, it was taken over by Donato Bitetto. The little factory was converted into a store selling chocolates and liqueurs. It was then passed down from generation to generation in the Bitetto family, before being purchased in 1973 by Domenico Sifanno, who had worked there as an employee from the age of seven. It is still managed by his family today. The historical sign still runs across the storefront. Any stroll through the narrow streets of the old city must take in a visit to the shop.

The square is filled with very busy bars and restaurants and, together with Piazza Mercantile, has become a must for those enjoying Bari’s nightlife. Charming and romantic evening views of the brightly lit seafront can be enjoyed from the square and the access ramp to Via Venezia. It is the perfect place to hold concerts, artistic performances and especially the majestic illuminations that accompany the festival which honours of the patron saint of Bari, San Nicola.

The piazza has always represented the heart of commercial and administrative activities in the city due to the presence of the city market (not currently in this area) and of the palazzo Sedile, which is the historical reference point of Bari city Hall. Today, for the citizens of Bari it is an irreplaceable meeting point.

One of the most picturesque corners reachable after walking through the characteristic alleys. The ruins of the ancient Byzantine church dedicated to Santa Maria del Buonconsiglio still stand here, built in the 9th century and demolished in the 1930s. Of the church with three naves with a single apse, eight columns, two rectangular pillars and two half-columns with a molded base remain visible, found during the excavations of 1983 which brought to light the mosaics of the pavement with polychrome limestone blocks.

The Teatro Margherita was built between 1912 and 1914 in the old port on piles driven into the harbour bed. This unusual step was taken in order to bypass an agreement between the Municipality of Bari and the Petruzzelli family, according to which the public authority undertook not to build any other theatres on municipal soil, with the exception of structures built on the water.

The Russian Church, an orthodox building dedicated to St. Nicholas, has been a destination for years for Orthodox pilgrims from Russia. The church, built by architect Aleksej Viktorovic Ščusev, stands out with its green dome reminiscent of those of the Kremlin and is surrounded by a peaceful garden of lemon trees which also houses the hotel for pilgrims and the small Church of San Spiridon in Greek Orthodox rite.
