SEESIGHTING - BUDA CASTLE: The first, Gothic style palace was built during the reign of Louis the Great, King Sigismund and King Matthias (from the middle of the 14th century until the end of the 15th). It became a royal residence of European rank, with its Gothic and Renaissance elements. Buda was occupied by the Turks in 1541, and it was only retaken during the Christian siege of Buda in 1686. The three-month siege has ruined both the Gothic castle and the residential part of today's Castle District. Following the expulsion of the Turks, the restoration of most buildings was completed in the then-fashionable Baroque style, using the existing remains of buildings. The construction of a much smaller Baroque palace was started in 1715, whose ground area was later extended. At the end of the 19th century, the place almost doubled in size, and a large back wing, today housing the Széchenyi National Library, was added. The architects, Miklós Ybl and Alajos Hauszmann have decorated the palace with Art Nouveau elements, in addition to the existing Baroque style. In WWII, the palace and the Castle District were the last refuge of the Germany Army, which fell under heavy siege from the invading Soviet Army. The palace was again damaged; reconstruction started in the 1950s. Leading architects of the age have announced that they wanted to return to the 18-th century Baroque form of the palace, and at the same time keep its 19th century dimensions. They constructed a Baroque façade that never existed before. SEESIGHTING - BUDA CASTLE FUNICULAR: The Budapest Castle Hill Funicular or Budavári Sikló is a funicular railway in the city of Budapest, in Hungary. It links the Adam Clark Square and the Széchenyi Chain Bridge at river level to Buda Castle above. The line was opened on March 2, 1870, and has been in municipal ownership since 1920. It was destroyed in the Second World War and reopened on June 4, 1986. A feature of the line are the two pedestrian foot bridges which cross above it. SEESIGHTING - Zugliget Chairlift: The Chairlift ("Libegő" in Hungarian) is a popular alternative means of transport in the Buda Hills. The nearly 1-km-long, cable-suspended conveyance is found in District XII, and takes riders up the side of János Hill in about 15 minutes. Near the upper station stands the Erzsébet Lookout Tower, providing an amazing view of Budapest. After almost 10 years in private hands, the Libegő is operated by the BKV (Budapest Transport Privately Held Corporation) today. SEESIGHTING - CHAIN BRIDGE: With the Buda Castle in the background, the Hungarian capital’s first bridge, now a monument, is a fascinating spectacle that has attracted many tourists to Budapest. The bridge was built upon the request of Count István Széchenyi by designer William Tierney Clark and engineer Adam Clark between 1839 and 1849. Like many other Danube bridges, the Chain Bridge did not survive the ravages of the World War, so it had to be rebuilt in 1949, marking the centenary of its first opening. SEESIGHTING - ELISABETH BRIDGE: The bridge, named after popular Habsburg queen Elizabeth (Sissi) was the only one which could not be reconstructed after World War II, so a new one was built to replace it. Today’s bridge structure links the foot of Gellért Hill with the downtown of Pest. The bridge takes the heaviest vehicle traffic out of all the other bridges in Budapest. The city council has evaluated 43 competing entries for the bridge construction tender. The winning plans were submitted by Albert Czekelius and Antal Kherndl. At the time the bridge was finally handed over to the public, there was no other chain-type bridge in the world with such length and without riverbed pillars. Construction commenced in 1897 and the bridge was inaugurated in 1903. Until the year 1926, it was the largest chain-type bridge in the world with a central opening of 290 meters. The bridge, which was blown up by the retreating German Army in 1945, was the only bridge in Budapest beyond repair. The construction of the new Elizabeth Bridge began in 1960, to be handed over in 1964. The new cable bridge was built in exactly the same place, under the supervision of architect Pál Sávory. It stands on it old pillars, but with added width to the bridge, as the newly built pedestrian range falls outside the suspension cables. Due to Budapest's increased motorized traffic, a wider dual carriageway has been built, with tram tracks running in the middle. SEESIGHTING - CITADEL: The Gellért Hill is the capital’s popular excursion place. The Citadel can also be found here. It used to be a fortress, which was erected in 1854 by the Habsburg emperors after overcoming the Hungarian army in the revolution of 1848-49. A unique Budapest panorama, which is part of the world heritage, can be also enjoyed here. Other sights on the hill: the sculpture of the bishop St. Gellért (Gerard), the St. Gellért Cliff Church and the Liberty Statue. ----- Gellért Hill is a 235 m high hill overlooking the Danube in Budapest, Hungary. It is part of the 1st and 11th Districts. Gellért Hill was named after Saint Gerard who was thrown to death from the hill. Now an affluent residential area, a number of embassies and ambassadorial residences line the streets which wind up the hill. Since 1987, the area is listed as a world heritage site as part of "the Banks of the Danube". A large proportion of the hill consists of parkland. Fishermen's Bastion

SEESIGHTING - FISHERMEN'S BASTION: The main façade of the Fisherman’s Bastion, running parallel to the Danube, is approximately 140 metres long. The seven stone towers with their pointed tops symbolise the leaders of the Hungarian tribes who conquered the country in 896. It was built in place of the old fortification walls in neo-Romanesque style between 1895 and 1902 on the plans of Frigyes Schulek, who was also in charge of the reconstruction of the Mathias Church. SEESIGHTING - The church is officially called The Church of Our Lady, and served as a coronation church from the 16th century on. Its vast ecclesiastical collection and treasury is open for visitors. During the centuries, the church underwent several major transformations, the first of which was the addendum of the Mary-gate (Mária-kapu), and in 1470, the 60-metre south side tower, with the King’s raven ensign, was erected. During the Turkish occupation, the church was turned into a mosque and its walls were whitewashed; in the 17th century, it was again rebuilt in Baroque style. Shoes on the Danube Bank

SEESIGHTING - SHOES ON THE DANUBE EMBANKMENT: This world-famous composition, which comprises 60 pairs of metal shoes set in concrete on the Danube embankment, was set up in the year 2005. It commemorates the Hungarian Jewish victims of the killings committed by the Arrow Cross militiamen, the pro-German, anti-Semitic, national socialist party members of Hungary in 1944-1945. SEESIGHTING - Szentendre is only about an hour from central Budapest and makes the perfect day trip. Walk through its cobble-stoned streets, peruse the galleries and shops, eat Hungary’s famous fried dough at one of the many lángos stands and climb to one of the look-out points for a view of the town and Danube. For most of the year - but especially during summer - Szentendre is a very popular tourist destination. To take a break from the tourists, take a stroll along the bank of the Danube and see this mighty river from up-close. The nearby “Skanzen,” an open-air museum, presents the Hungarian way of life from the late 18th to early 19th century. Kazinczy Street Synagogue

SEESIGHTING - The gigantic building that dominates the narrow Kazinczy Street was completed between 1912 and 1913, based on the plans of Sándor Löffler and Béla Löffler. The interior is decorated with decorative stonework that supports glass windows painted by Miksa Róth. The Torah reading platform stands in the middle of the space. At the end of the 19th century, the Jewish community of Pest broke into three branches – Neolog, status quo ante and Orthodox. The Kazinczy Street Synagogue was built for the latter - the most tradition-bound, strict Jewish community. The community building complex includes the synagogue, a house of worship, headquarters, a kindergarten, a Talmud school, a butcher and bath (mikveh). The latter was renovated in 2004, under the guidance of a Hasidic plumber from New York, who worked here from Sundays to Thursdays, then got on a plane and went home to spend the Sabbath with his family. The water of the well that supplies the bath’s was purified with 1000 liters of red wine. Rumbach Street Synagogue

SEESIGHTING - The synagogue in Rumbach Sebestyén Street, built for the status quo ante community, is one of the most interesting buildings of Erzsébetváros. The building with Romantic and Moorish features was completed between 1869 and 1872, based on the plans of Viennese architect Otto Wagner. Interestingly, Mór Kallina might have contributed to the design work – he is mostly known as the designer of the Budai Vigadó and the recently renovated Honvéd High Command. Two minaret-like, domed towers rise over the symmetrical façade. The center of the façade, is decorated with double-framed windows and the two stone tablets of Moses. The greyish yellow plastering is decorated by strips made from red bricks and blue enamel bricks. The octagonal interior is topped by a high and ornate dome, with eight slender iron columns and Moorish-like Alhambra column caps. On the walls, we can find gold, blue and red colored embossments. Holocaust Memorial Center

SEESIGHTING - Holocaust memorial center: The Páva Synagogue and the adjoining new wing designed by the Ybl-prize winner István Mányi houses the Holocaust Memorial Center since 2004. The institution was awarded Nivó Prize of Architecture for restoration and rehabilitation of a historic monument in 2005. The building complex is a mix of classical and modern architecture. The building’s asymmetrical outline, the dislocated walls, and the descending stairs in the exhibition halls, all symbolize the distorted and twisted time of the Holocaust. From the inner courtyard, a flight of descending stairs underneath a leaning glass structure leads to the exhibition halls. The lecture hall, the rooms for group activities, the archive, and the library are on the ground floor, while the first floor houses the offices. Church of Saint Mary Magdalene

SEESIGHTING - The Church of Mary Magdalene (Mária Magdolna-templom) in the Castle District of Buda was built in the 13th century and its unfortunate fate is telling of Hungarian history. During the Ottoman Occupation of Hungary, it was the only functioning Christian church in the country, until its transformation to a mosque in the 16th century. Its original function was later restored and it served as the coronation venue for Franz I of Hungary. It suffered severe damage throughout the World Wars, and it was almost completely destroyed during the Communist Era - with the exception of its Gothic belfry and some minor sections. SEESIGHTING - Hungarian Academy of Sciences: The Hungarian Academy of Sciences at Széchenyi Square, near the Pest end of the Chain Bridge is the workplace of the greatest brains of the country since 1825, from balneologists and heraldic experts to psycholinguistic specialists. The founder István Széchenyi, “the greatest Hungarian”, gave the institute, formerly known as the Hungarian Scholarly Society, two things: one of his total annual income and the task of dissemination of scientific findings. Therefore it is no coincidence that the Academy uses a painting of Mrs. Széchenyi as its logo, along with an eternal slogan: “Borúra derű!” The building itself was finished only after the death of the founder nobleman, in 1865, but it is still one of the most beautiful works of architect Miklós Ybl, next to the Opera House and the Buda Castle. Currently, there are nearly three hundred full members of the Academy, but including the correspondents, external and honorary members, as well as its doctors, almost ten thousand people are connected to the center of Hungarian scientific life in some way. The Library of MTA, founded in 1826, is one of the largest scientific libraries of the country. SEESIGHTING - The Danube Promenade: YOU CAN SEE FROM THERE THE BUDA CASTLE, BRIDGES, CITADEL (we recommend it in the evening). The Pest-side pedestrian zone between the Chain Bridge and the Elizabeth Bridge is called Danube Promenade (Duna-korzó). The promenade is a popular spot among locals and tourists both. It is fringed with 5-star hotels (InterContinental, Marriott, Sofitel), restaurants, cafés, bars and casinos. Some say it has the best panorama of Buda with clear and gorgeous view of the Buda Castle, the Citadel, Gellért Hill and some of the bridges of Budapest - so just go on a stroll or sit down for a drink here and soak it all in. It is a great spot for enjoying the annual fireworks of 20 August. Sometimes referred to as Budapest's Eiffel Tower, Bálna (“Whale”) is a marvelous and monumental attraction on the bank of the Danube, near the Great Market Hall. Currently, the building houses various shops; the greatest bang of Bálna is perhaps the Budapest Gallery, which is one of the largest non-profit galleries of Budapest with 760 square meters of exhibition space. It focuses primarily on contemporary art, but there are also exhibitions representing the classic avant-garde, and the art of the ‘40s and 60’s. In addition, the market dealing with bio products and antique artifacts in the belly of Bálna is worth mentioning as well, as well as the craft pub and Bálna Art Shop, all found on the same floor. Vigadó Concert Hall

Vigadó, built by the plans of Frigyes Feszl, was handed over in 1865. Within a short time, the most famous composers performed in the beautiful, multi-purpose building, including Liszt, Wagner, Brahms, Debussy, Dohnányi, and Bartók. It was seriously damaged in the Second World War and only re-opened in 1980, and in 2004, a reconstruction began with the goal of restoring the building to its original state. As a result, Vigadó – located next to the Danube Promenade – became one of the must-see attractions of Budapest again, providing a venue for exhibitions, concerts, theatrical events and films. TRADITIONAL CONFECTIONERY - $$ - Everything started with a rose: The small Serbian boy Szavits Mladen - who could have inherited the attraction towards oriental sweets with the blood of his ancestors fled from the Balkan - growing up without a father lin Szentendre in poverty was a confectionery student in the shop of the appreciated Auguszt E. József in the Krisztina Boulevard. One fine day - at the beginning of the 30s - a Danish confectioner came to the company, who showed that: with appropriate manual skills, attention and plenty of practice pretty roses can be moulded from the sugared almond mass, the marzipan. The apprentice learnt the lesson with close observation. Since then great many of hours, days, months, years and centuries passed and many-many hundreds of thousands marzipan roses were sold. He met a woman, of course in the confectionery, they had beautiful children and for today even their grandchildren are grown-ups, a decent son-in-law came to the house and all of them learnt how to make roses. The Szamos marzipan company employing more than 200 people in Pilisvörösvár came into leaf by the middle of the 90s from that rose. TRADITIONAL CONFECTIONERY - $$ - The Ruszwurm confectioner’s is a magic from the past in the present in the Castle district in the (The history of Ruszwurm confectioner’s) neighbourhood of Matthias Churc in Buapest. The spectacular confectioner’s was founded by Ferenc Schwabl in 1827. The biedermeier interior still includes the cherrywooden counter made by the master joiner Krautsieder, and the dialplate of the clock from the age of I. Ferenc. After the death of Schwabl the confectioner’s was led by his widow’s second husband, Lénárt Richter, and after his death Antal Müller, the husband of Richer’s niece became the manager. He is the „father” of the most favorite sweeteners, the Linzer, which was named after the Hungarian liutenant Rudolf Linzer. Between 1884-1922 Vilmos Ruszwurm, the husband of Müller’s daughter Róza was the manager and after his health damaged, Ferenc Tóth followed the tradition. After the nationalisation, the confectioner’s was active for three years, then it closed, and opened only 20th August 1960. From 1976 István Lukács led the confectioner’s, and since 1990 the family Szamos has been managing the shop. Nowadays the confectioner’s is one of the most popular sight of Budapest, the house and the interior are protected monuments. BATH - Similar to several other baths in Budapest, Király Bath was also built during the Turkish occupation of Hungary during the second half of the 16th century. It has retained its original layout ever since, although several annexes were added to it during the 18th century. This eclectic solution lends a unique air to Király Bath. The construction of the Bath was started by Arslan, Pasha of Buda in 1565 and was completed by his successor, Sokoli Mustafa. Király Bath had no direct hot water base at the time, nor has any today. The Turks built the Bath far from the springs to ensure the opportunity for bathing even in the case of an eventual siege, within the walls of the castle. The water was supplied at time, and is still being supplied, from the area of the current Lukács Bath. After Buda returned to Hungarian rule, the Bath was acquired by the König family in 1796. They rebuilt it to its current form, combining the old with the new, and preserving its historical character. The name of the Bath stems from the name of the family (Király=King=König). LUXURY SHOPS - Andrássy Avenue is the Hungarian Champs-Élysées. It was built for the millennial celebrations of 1896 and connects Városliget and Heroes’ Square to the downtown area. Underneath the widest and most elegant street in Budapest runs the Millennium Underground line. The whole area is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Andrássy Avenue i s divided into four parts. The section between Erzsébet Square and Oktogon is dominated by world-famous luxury brands. In addition to haute-couture parlours, you'll also find the Opera, the “Broadway of Pest”, Liszt Ferenc Square, and the Paris Department Store here. From Oktogon to Kodály Körönd, the avenue is expanded by a service road and a tree-lined walkway on each side. Here, you'll find the House of Terror and residential buildings. The street view slightly changes between Kodály Körönd and Bajza Street, as here the palaces have front yards. From Bajza Street to Heroes' Square there are individual villas surrounded by gardens, similar to Pasarét or Rózsadomb. The Cogwheel Railway (Fogaskerekű) is yet another peculiarity of public transportation in Budapest. It runs from Városmajor Park up to Széchenyi Hill through the Svábhegy area. Cave of Paul Valley

We are in the hilly area between Gellért hill and Castle hill. This is where you can find Tabán, the most buzzing entertainment district of the previous century. Grape plantations, brothels, restaurants, inns - this is what would have been said about the area 100 years ago. Today, the green area is a much loved concert location, with its own annual festival (Tabán Festival), and with the only art cinema in Buda, Tabán Kinotéka. There are also some baths that remained from Turkish times, such as Rudas or Rácz Thermal Bath. Liberty Square

Szabadság tér is one of the most stately squares downtown, easily accessible also from the direction of the Parliament, through Kossuth tér. Dominated by a huge park, the square is a popular place to hang out. Although the Hungarian Television, once housed in the Exchange Palace, left in 2009, Szabadság tér is still home to several bank HQs and the Embassy of the United States. The monument of the Soviet Forces that liberated (later: occupied) Hungary in WW2 still stands here - in a bit of a contradiction with the name of the place, which translates to Liberty Square. After the systems change, there were speculations to tear the monument down, but in the end it stayed as a memento of the war and the communist era. Thanks to its reconstruction in 2003, Szabadság tér is now a well-kempt park with playgrounds.
