Food & Drinking scene

Famous for its gin bar, Officina 12 is a real experience. With an enormous restaurant space, both inside and out, the food is consistently good and so is the service. Always buzzing with people and activity on the weekends, you can expect a great atmosphere. The restaurant serves modern Italian cuisine, the portions are generous and the courses from appetizers to dessert are frankly delicious. I would recommend a group dinner and a peruse of the extensive wine list. But if you want just to drink, GINO12, the gin corner of restaurant Officina12, has rapidly become the place to be for gin lovers. It's a must to try their creative gin cocktails. This is the kind of place you can arrive for dinner and stay until close around 1am. After dinner, you can take a walk along the Naviglio canals as a way to end a wonderful evening out. www.officina12.it

'Ceresio' is a pool and restaurant bar perched high up on a roof terrace overlooking the historical 'Cimitero Monumentale'. You could have a day on the terrace using all the facilities: the pool, restaurant and bar. It could be a day to treat yourself or you can also go there just for a cocktail or dinner in the evening to appreciate the sunset. Since it's nearby Corso Como you can also plan to have your night out in that area. www.ceresio7.com

For an early start, pop into ‘That’s Bakery’ (via Vigevano, 41) for breakfast. Located between the Porta Genoa metro and Navigli Grande, the café serves everything from apple pancakes to Croque Madames, but I love the homemade brioches filled with Nutella best of all.

For a more intimate drink, I beeline to ‘MAG Café'(ripa di Porta Ticinese, 43), a cozy bar with a bohemian design and plenty of crushed velvet armchairs to settle into for a conversation over a glass of wine.

Classic Neapolitan pizzeria with wood-burning oven, room with air-conditioner and outdoor garden. Typical Neapolitan dishes prepared with strictly Italian and top quality products: ricotta, mozzarella and mozzarella di bufalo, gragnano pasta, extra virgin olive oil, san marzano tomatoes, vesuvio tomatoes, Corbara tomatoes, stone-ground flour, long-rising pizza dough.... The products are produced in Camapania (south of Italy) and delivered fresh at the restaurant every day.

'Duomo'. It's the most important monument in the city centre. Inside the Cathedral you will appreciate the architecture, imperial paintings and unique pieces of art. If you want, you can also go all the way up and walk around the roof from which you will appreciate the unique sight of Milan from above.

‘Il quadrilatero della moda' is how we call the area in Milan which represents the centre of the fashion world. If you love fashion, then you will really want to go and appreciate all the most stylish fashion designers on offer, from Gucci, Prada and Versace. You’ll find the high streets of this glamorous area on Via Monte Napoleone e Via Della Spiga. It is nearby Piazza Duomo, but if you prefer you can reach this area by underground as well: Monte Napoleone underground stop.

'Castello Sforzesco' (Sforzesco Castele) You can visit the castle, see the exhibitions or just walk through to reach the beautiful park behind for a unique picnic. It is a public park with bars and different activities going on throughout. You can rent a 4-person-bike and explore the park in a new way whilst having a laugh with friends. Castello Sforzesco is a short walk from Piazza Duomo. But if you prefer, you can get on the underground and stop at Cairoli Castello.

VICOLO DEI LAVANDAI Walk through the picturesque Vicolo dei Lavandai which runs off of Naviglio Grande. The colourful street is one of the prettiest in the area and gets the name “Washerwoman’s alley” because it was where the women in the neighbourhood would come to scrub clothes on the stone slabs that can be found along the lane.

Remember that Milan’s canals were first built in the 12th century to connect the growing city to the Po River for easy access to food and goods from the countryside. When Leonardo Da Vinci came to the city to work on The Last Supper, he also played a hand in helping to dream up a series of dams to keep the canals flowing smoothly. The artistic engineer designed the canal locks for the Naviglio di San Marco basin, which can still be seen today.

When I need something a bit more contemporary, I explore the art galleries that line Naviglio Grande. The modern art spaces often feature younger artists, and Miradoli Arte Contemporanea (Alzaia Naviglio Grande, 54) in particular always has new talent on display.
