Best Chinese by far in the area with outdoor seating on a lovely street in the summer. Cooks are usually Szechuan, so if you like your food spicy, you can get it. If you can communicate that you want your food more "authentic", they'll skip the somewhat gross starchy sauce they put on some dishes for Westerners.

An authentic Berlin pub, so a but rough around the edges. But full of 20 and 30 somethings after 10/11 PM. Live music on Thursdays, lots of people just having fun in an unpretentious atmosphere. Best - it's a half block away AND open 24 hours.

Gay bar with a Berlin twist. If you want a bit more hardcore, you can't beat it for close and sizzling on Tuesdays and Sundays. Thursday is also generally full. But crowds come after 12 midnight usually. If you don't know German, the name means "Fuck 3000" and you have to ring the bell to get in. One of two museums that I'll recommend. Of course the Pergammon and Egyptian museums, and others, are world class. But if you're into European painting from the Middle Ages through the 18th century, the Gemäldegalerie has a stunning collection that isn't too overwhelming. Strong points are Italian Renaissance, Dutch and Flemish, and German.

Why would you eat Japanese in Berlin? I can't answer that question. But if you want to spend some extra money and are missing your Japanese, Shiori is a cut above. Why would you want to eat Austrian food in Berlin? Because it's generally done well and tastes better than a Currywurst. Pricier, not over the top, with a relaxing space and quiet outdoor seating. Go for the huge but tender Wienerschnitzel (veal or pork) or my favorite, Tafelspitz (braised beef in two courses). Unquestionably the coolest Japanese entrant in my guide. I enjoy the food immensely and am a Japanophile purist who's been to the very best restaurants in Tokyo.
