38.2 miles from my home. Mount Charleston is a tall peak in the mountain ranges to the north/north-west of Las Vegas. The tall and cool peak of Mount Charleston is only a 45 minute drive. This peak is snowy in winter, with skiing and snow boarding a popular draw. Any time of year, the area makes for cool hikes among tall pines.
A popular overlook is the The Desert View Overlook Trail at 2525 Kyle Canyon Rd, Mt Charleston, NV 89124. The Trail is 0.1 miles of paved walkway that winds down to multiple viewing platforms past educational panels set near the trees and at key vantage points along the way. The Desert View Overlook has expansive views of the Mojave Desert and is known for being a great vantage point for bomb detonation viewing during the Atomic Era, and many of the panels share details about this era. Panels also share information about the flora, fauna, and geology of the surrounding mountains and dry lake beds. Trail is gently sloped with switchbacks to ease the elevation difference from the trail head to the final viewing platform and is wheelchair accessible. Parking lot is open in winter but trail is not cleared of snow. The nearby Deer Creek Picnic Area parking lot has bathrooms.

It is Nevada's oldest state park, as commemorated with Nevada Historical Marker #150. It was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1968.

An real letter from Albert Einstein warns President Roosevelt of NAZI atomic testing, which could lead to development of a powerful bomb.
Exhibits are chalk-full of interesting facts. Everyone who visits comes away with a lot to debate and discuss.

This is a great place if you want to play the slots, have a great meal, and see a movie all in one location. The casino is across the street from the large, outdoor Summerlin Mall.
