Schaerbeek is a jewel of diversity known for its Art Deco and Art Nouveau architecture, arts and innovations. The proud mascot of the commune is the donkey, reminiscent of the times when Schaerbeek was the cultivator of sour cherries, primarily for the production of Kriek (cherry beer). The donkey, representing perseverance, remains a solid historic symbol throughout the neighborhood.

The vibrant Sainte Catherine is a must-see area of Brussels — a well-suited match of old style and new vibes. Located just a stone’s throw from the Grand Place, it is a paradise for seafood lovers and for those who are looking for a lively and alternative spot in the heart of the Belgian capital. For every Christmas lover and an amazing event for every age. Place Sainte-Catherine is the epicenter of the Brussels Christmas Market; the wooden chalets on the sides of the Vismet are ready to charm you with their spicy hot wine, hot rum with honey and countless gourmet dishes — from the typical Belgian waffles and salmon to meat and Italian delicacies. Curiously enough, a spacious Swiss chalet stands out in the middle of the square; inside, Swiss traditional fondues can be tasted together with some renowned wine. The picture can only be completed with a ride in the magnificent Ferris wheel, which gives the opportunity to admire, from above, a breathtaking Brussels illuminated by the Christmas decorations.

Here you will find the relaxed side of the living capital of Belgium and Europe. As a trendy district in Brussels, Les Marolles is above all a conglomerate of ultra-relaxed artist souls. The same goes for it everywhere: street art everywhere, small galleries, one of the largest flea markets in Europe on antique shops and extremely cozy bars. Just switch off the daily routine and drink a Moroccan mint tea.

Rue de Page Directly off Place du Châtelain is Rue de Page, a street with an array of restaurants that will take you weeks to get through. Choosing where to start is always the problem, but for old school glamor, you can do no better than La Quincaillerie. The restaurant is an institution of the Brussels seafood scene and housed in a former chandlery designed by a student of Art Nouveau architect Victor Horta.

Visit The ‘Crazy Donkey’ and ‘Green Donkey’ Right next to each other and facing Les Halles, you can discover more of Schaerbeek’s history, the Crazy Donkey and the Green Donkey. L’Âne Fou is as traditional as it gets for Belgium bistro experience, with an added cultural experience of historic Schaerbeek. Objects of all sorts decorate every inch of space in this cozy café with souvenirs of the commune dating back to the end of the 19th century and into the 20th, without forgetting the Schaerbeek donkey. You can also see other Brussels and Belgian icons such as Tintin. Numerous tourists, students, and culture lovers find their way to this café, and in the evenings when there are shows at the Halles, it can get very busy. On certain evenings the café itself hosts small live concerts, including jazz. A few doors down is L’Âne Vert, a fine dining experience of Belgian gastronomy with Schaerbeek heritage.

A singular place, out of time. A place where you escape the city in a good Brussels atmosphere! Here you will meet people from Brussels and a sport that you certainly do not know! Absolutely worth seeing - not fancy but unique Only during the summer - the Friday Fish Parties And Archery at the vertical pole Tapas of fresh fish and crustaceans grilled on the grill My favorite weekly event is probably the Friday Fish Party! Behind a grill à la plancha, Bernard and Isabel wriggle fish and shellfish to fill mismatched plates of fresh and homemade tapas. Every Friday, the dishes are different. Fish sticks of black locust, octopus snacked, solettes or knives with wild garlic, fricassee of mackerel ... The price of each preparation varies between 5 and 10 euros. Three plates will satisfy you, but we prefer everything to order to share with friends until more hungry. If these three culinary appointments punctuate the weeks, the Buvette Sint-Sebastiaan regularly launches other events such as film clubs, concerts, aperos tastings, smoutbollen crisp afternoons, Archery at the vertical pole It was in 1598 that the guild was established in Schaerbeek. It then depends on the Royal Grand Oath of Saint Sebastian of Brussels founded in 1381. The Schaerbeek guild regularly organizes the "papegay game". The bird is then fixed on the tower of the old church Saint-Servais. The winner can proudly display his King's insignia, consisting of a very large necklace of velvet and silver, a staff of honor and a silver bird that hangs in the hat. 100 years of Archery at the vertical pole at Josaphat Park In 1919, the San Sebastian Guild obtained permission to raise a mast on the new sports plain (west side of Josaphat Park). In total, there are four poles, which can still be found today, for the use of archers. To refresh fencers and spectators, a refreshment bar is also built in the 1930s. It is still managed today by the Guild of San Sebastián and you can come to attend the different competitions and training of members of the guild each summer.

CAFÉ WALVIS Dansaertstraat 209 1000 Brussels What? Brussels has that little bit more je ne sais quoi than other cities and you can find that completely in Café Walvis. A hip, but now more than established address on the corner of Dansaertstraat and Vlaanderenstraat. The location can be described as cozy with a hodgepodge of personalities. Café Walvis is a good start. Looks? The well-known café interior designer Frédéric Nicolay, who is the owner of the building, freshened up the business following the reopening. A very long bar, unique design, the large terrace and its typical ambiance are all Walvis's assets. What else? Frédéric Nicolay is a Brussels entrepreneur who likes to buy dilapidated buildings in dilapidated neighborhoods, to decorate them with taste and immediately revive the entire neighborhood. In addition to Walvis, so he took care of our other Brussels night spots such as Potemkine, Belga and so on. A little further down Dansaertstraat, he opened

BAR BETON Rue Antoine Dansaert 114, 1000 Bruxelles Yes, you can guess three times why the bar is called Beton Bar Beton. Because of a concrete counter, behind which the service serves the best coffee (even with soymilk). In the morning, relaxed classical music is playing here and the mood is really great. It is especially nice here in the early evening, when the sun goes down and you get the last rays of sunshine.

Time for the first Belgian beer than leave the gallery and cross the street and you will find À la Mort Subite Rue Montagne aux Herbes Potagères 7, 1000 Bruxelles 02 513 13 18 We need to go back in time more than 100 years to explore the origin of this unusual name. Around 1910 Mr THEOPHILE VOSSEN ran an establishment called "LA COUR ROYALE". Amongst his many customers were a lot of employees working at the National Bank of Belgium. They would kill their time in the pub playing a dice game called "421". Before returning to the office, the employees would play a quick last game and the loser was called the "MORT SUBITE" or sudden death. Very soon this name became well known and THEOPHILE VOSSEN decided to rename his pub and beer: "A LA MORT SUBITE". The tradition has been continued ever since. Today, the fourth generation of the VOSSEN family still serves the delicious Gueuze beers in the same establishment with the original 1928' decoration.

Chez Richard Rue des Minimes 2, 1000 Bruxelles 0479 61 12 56 Behind its Parisian looks, the terrace is probably one of the friendliest places in town, a happy melting pot of individuals from all possible horizons, at any time of the day. New life has been brought to this renowned institution. The food is definitely one of the reasons to come to Chez Richard, as most of the cooks have worked in Nicolas Scheidt’s kitchens and seem to have a really good idea of what they’re doing. Go for the Argentinian beef, the clams and the shrimp croquette. Located in the Sablons, it is often the favourite stop for art dealers and collectors on their way to openings.

Brunch, lunch, aperitif ... Spend when you want, there will always be something to eat! The leaves fall gently from the trees and the terrace of La Laiterie offers a breathtaking view of the red and golden landscape of Parc Josaphat. I love this new place in Châtelain neighborhood! I have to confess that I am not a big fan of traiteurs: food is normally bad and rather expensive. Alimentation however proposes amazing freshly cooked dishes at very reasonable prizes. I could totally recommend the ceviche, the roasted vegetables, the carrot cake and the roasted chicken the weekends (the best I've tried in Brussels). They change the menu everyday so just pass by and choose whatever you feel like that day. Apart from take away food you can also buy organic vegetables, beer and wine (large selection) and fantastic bread. Not to be missed!

A classic establishment of Brussels, this is a popular spot for locals and is known for being a trendy place with an amazing and vast terrace. At Belga (as it’s known), you will find the right atmosphere for all your needs: a space to work or a place to host an evening with friends. Good music and top-quality service create an atmosphere where everybody wants to go, whether it be morning, noon or night. What A Brussels café in extra-large size. On the bustling Place Flagey in Brussels, between the web of tram tracks and the sea of apartment blocks with bleached yellow bricks, the hippest café in our capital shines. Café Belga (an initiative of Frédéric Nicolay - see Flamingo, Barbeton, Potemkine, ...) is located on the ground floor of the Art Deco building that gave the square its name, and was the base of the BRT until the 1970s. The menu, on the other hand, is innovative. Exotic dishes and desserts that cannot be found anywhere else are on the bar every day at Café Belga: from Lebanese bread to American sandwiches. Those who prefer to play safely can still go for a sandwich with ham and cheese of course. What else? You sit down on the terrace along which you see the whole of Brussels passing: no better place to blend with the locals. Info? Open every day from 8 am to 2 pm (Friday and Saturday until 3 am).

Magritte House – In the painter’s residence Imagine walking the suburbs of Brussels. Suddenly you see one solitary old street lantern that vaguely reminds you of some paintings you saw during your visit to the Magritte Museum. Then you spot a house with a doorbell that says ‘Magritte’. You ring it. Someone opens the door and lets you in. Yes, you have entered the residence of René Magritte (1898-1967). In this small house, Belgium’s most famous painter lived with his wife Georgette Berger between 1930 and 1954. They rented the ground floor. Their friends, a bunch of artists, often came over to discuss new surrealist ideas and aesthetics. In the small dining room René Magritte created over 800 works, half of his total artistic production – including a great number of his masterpieces. The entire house was turned into a lovely little museum in 1999. This modest gem is a brilliant alternative to the immensely popular and crowded Magritte Museum in the city centre (read the Mont des Arts article). The restored rooms suck you into the artist’s daily world. You will recognize many elements such as the staircase, windows, fireplace or closets which appear in Magritte’s paintings. Personal documents, photographs, letters, watercolors and some paintings draw you further into the artist’s life and mind. René and Georgette did not have any children. But they were very fond of their dogs. They even stuffed one of them after its death. The white dog is lying on their bed, happily smiling. Ceci est un chien de Magritte. Quite surreal, if you think about it. +3224282626 Opening Times Wed - Sun 10:00 - 18:00 Price Full price: € 8

Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert Rue du Marché aux Herbes 90 1000 Bruxelles Built in 1847 by the architect Cluysenaer in the style of the Florentine Renaissance, the majestic, 200-meter heritage-listed Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert are home to a unique mix of culture and luxury boutiques in their magnificent glass roof. The Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert are composed of three parts: the "Galerie de la Reine" (Gallery of the Queen), the "Galerie du Roi" (Gallery of the King) and the "Galerie du Prince" (Gallery of the Prince). The gallery included shops, auditoriums, cafés, restaurants and apartments. The place to be seen for the fashionable, right away, the Royal Galleries of Saint Hubert drew a wide audience, attracted by its luxury brands, elegant cafés and cultural spaces. These included the Théâtre du Vaudeville, the Cinéma des Galeries and the Taverne du Passage, called the Café des Arts until 1892 and the meeting place for painters and writers of the time. The colony of French refugees, like Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Edgar Quinet and others, would also gather there. The Surrealist painters and artists from the Cobra group were regulars at the venue. A commemorative plaque recalls the first showing of the Lumière brothers’ motion picture camera on 1 March 1896, in the former dispatch room of the La Chronique daily newspaper (above Pâtisserie Meert, Galerie du Roi). Nowadays, the Galerie du Roi is home to the Museum of Letters and Manuscripts and honours the greatest men and women of art, history, music, the humanities and science. Absolutely worth seeing: Delvaux, Mary Chocolatier, Maison Dandoy, Ganterie Italienne, Mocha Tavern, etc.

The Grand Place in Brussels is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most beautiful places in the world. Architectural pearls: Here you can admire an extremely successful blend of architectural styles, characteristic of the culture and society of a prosperous northern European city. The Grand Place is surrounded by majestic guild houses dating mostly to the 17th century. The city hall of Brussels, built at the beginning of the 15th century (1402), dominates the overall architectural picture. Spectacular events on the Grand-Place: The Grand-Place is regularly the scene of several major events, including the medieval spectacle Ommegang and the famous flower carpet, in which the entire square is designed with a huge sea of flowers Incidentally, they are in the best of company, because even writers such as Baudelaire and Victor Hugo and even Karl Marx fell for the charm of the Grand Place.

And an art nouveau masterpiece that is home to the Musical Instrument Museum of Brussels (MIM). Rue Montagne de la Cour 2, 1000 BruxellesThis museum is totally worth a visit and one of the top things to do in Brussels for music lovers . On display here are truly unique instruments that are exquisite pieces of art in their own right (my faves are the ornately decorated pianos that are adorned with beautiful etchings and paintings of all kinds). Here you can explore more than 2,000 instruments, but the best you can also listen to them! After that you may feel a little hungry. A problem that is easy to fix since the MIM restaurant is located on the tenth floor of the building. Tip: The restaurant is accessible free! From this restaurant you have a breathtaking view of Brussels. Unfortunately, it is often overcrowded - but if you are lucky you can enjoy a delicious Sunday, brunch buffet here. Should it be too crowded the Kwint could be a very good alternative.

Admire the Sunset at Place Poelaert After passing by the Palace of Justice, a sunset view or even a simple walk is a must at Poelaert Square. One of the largest squares in Brussels, this spot allows you to enjoy a moment of contemplation, looking down over half of the city. Little discovery game - by looking over the city - Who can see Hollywood? If you’d like to become lost once again among the charming streets of the area, simply take the Marolles elevator, which is bicycle-friendly. In the Square you’ll see this public glass elevator, which doesn’t really fit in with the classical style of its surroundings, but will deliver you to Rue Haute in no time. Make from there a detour to Les Marolles.

The Palais de Justice Poelaertplein 1, Brussels, Belgium One feature you will definitely notice while wandering around the eastern part of the Marolles is the cupola of the Palace of Justice, which watches over the town. Prepare to take a big step backwards and tilt your head upwards to see the building entirely, since this mammoth architectural feat has a surface area of more than 20,000 m² (it is larger than St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican). It was built at the end of the 19th century in the neoclassical style and was once the biggest courthouse in the world. It also has the reputation of being the largest building built in the 19th century. An obvious sign of the law and power. For those who have the time, go inside, the entrance is free! Stroke of genius or megalomania? Some consider it awesome, others consider it oversized. It is an incredible building whose façade is teeming with columns, statues, structures and porches. A wild mixture of Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Mesopotamian elements. The Palace of Justice is a landmark of Brussels and at the same time an everlasting construction site. No one can remember what he looks like without scaffolding today. Rumor has it that Joseph Poelaert went insane at the end of his life. If you look at his last work, you might well consider that. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and the Palace of Justice was just one of his famous buildings. Other works by him are e.g. the Théâtre royale du Parc, the Théâtre de la Monnai and the cathedral Saint Michel et Gudule in Brussels. Under Leopold II, he was responsible for numerous magnificent buildings in the Belgian capital. Whatever this rumor came from, the fact is that it persists to this day. And that, although there is no valid evidence for the crazy architect's story.

It is embellished with 19th-century Belgian artists’ sculptures. A fountain-statue on the back of the garden representing earls d’Egmont and the Hornes was sculpted in 1864 by Charles-Auguste Fraikin. 10 marble statues forming an arc represent lustrous, decapitated Belgian earls. These statues were all made by famous Belgian artists of the time such as Julien Dillens or Alphonse de Tombay. It’s a lovely spot to walk around and read a book, especially in the springtime.

Musée de la Bière

Discover Belgian History at the Beer Museum On the lovely avenue of Louis Bertrand, lies the entrance to the Musée de la Bière founded in 1993 when eleven founders loaned their collection of around 300 bottles of Belgian beer to kick start the museum, which opened its doors in 1994. In the current version of the museum, you can prepare yourself to see a collection of over 1,000 bottles still in partnership with their companion glasses, historic beer making machines, pub and beer signs, old documents, and plenty more to taste, learn and experience. The museum is open on Wednesdays and Saturday afternoons from 2 pm to 6 pm.

Train World, Museum

Step Into One of the Oldest Train Stations of Belgium The newly opened Train World, located in and as part of Schaerbeek’s railway station, creates a journey into history and a futuristic exploration of what lies hidden within the universe of train travel both in the past and future. It is considered not just another train museum, but rather an opera with the train as centerpiece. The museum spans the role of train travel across Belgian history and into international and global discovery. It covers the diversity of those who travel by train, from workers to families to aristocrats. Commuting has been crucial to Belgian history with its trains already transporting workers, families, and individuals since the mid-19th century. It takes you back to the time of the Expo 58, and you discover how and why the train itself played a key role in telling time. You will also see the originals of the Belgian history collection including ‘Le Belge’, the first locomotive to have been built in Belgium. In addition to the enriching cultural and architectural experience, visiting the glass-enclosed halls of the museum which connect the station to the city offers an opportunity for a spectacular panoramic view of Brussels.

Museum of Spontaneous Art

The Musée d’Art Spontané (Museum of Spontaneous Art) displays both permanent and traveling exhibitions of a category of art all of its own: spontaneous art. It’s a hidden little gem with some vibrantly colored paintings and filled to the brim with art ranging from art naïf to art brut. Art brut, or outsider art, was termed this way by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe this form of art which is created outside the boundaries of the official culture. It is a form of art that is spontaneous, without cultural pretenses and without intellectual effort. L’art naïf, on the other hand, is a form of art such as drawing by children, which are pure expressions without transmitted knowledge. In the last several years, outsider art has emerged as a successful category for marketing art, with annual fairs and published journals dedicated to the subject. It is located on Rue de la Constitution 27 and is open from Tuesday to Saturday 1 pm to 5 pm. Nice for Art lovers
