Hawaiian civilization was isolated from the rest of the world for at least 500 years. Europeans lead by a British explorer named James Cook arrived in the Hawaiian Islands in 1778. The Iolani Palace was the royal residence of the rulers of the Kingdom of Hawaii beginning with Kamehameha III. The Iolani Palace was built in 1879 and is the only Royal 馃憫 Palace on US soil.

I love this place! The exhibits change regularly. This is the only museum in the state of Hawaii devoted exclusively to contemporary art. In addition to preserving art since 1940, the museum maintained the historic Spalding House and gardens. It was originally built as a residence in 1925 by Anne Rice Cooke. I recommend the pear and walnut salad served in the Caf茅.

For nearly 60 years, Duke commissioned and collected artwork for the space, eventually forming a collection of over 4,000 objects. You will see a wide ranging collection of art, furnishings and built-in architecture from Iran, Morocco, Turkey, Spain, Syria, Egypt and India. The outdoor landscape has a number of gardens, including a formal Mughal garden inspired by the Shalimar Gardens, as well as tropical gardens, waterfall and fabulous views of the Pacific Ocean !
