General Gregorio Luperón House Museum, in Puerto Plata, is one of the most visited and beautiful places in the Dominican Republic, because there, it is conserved the legacy and work of the Dominican national hero. The museum is located in a victorian-style building. Inside, you can discover General Gregorio Luperón origins and story, thanks to the numerous photos and personal objects that the museum possesses. The life and times of native-born son and independence leader Gregorio Luperón are impressively fleshed out inside this beautifully restored, pale-green, Victorian-era building. Photographs and period artifacts trace Luperón's life, from humble beginnings to his role as provisional president during the 'Restoration,' as well as the story of Puerto Plata during the late-19th century. Staff are knowledgeable and enthusiastic

This is one of the most important historic sites in the Dominican Republic. And not many people know that La Isabela, the first Hispanic settlement in America, is here in Puerto Plata. There is not much left of that first settlement founded by Christopher Columbus, just the ruins of a house. There is a museum that explains how the Tahino Indians used to life before the discovery and how the Hispanic discovery did actually happened. There is a small church where the 1st Mass of America did actually happen. In the year 1992 when the 500 anniversary of the America discovery, the church was completely re-constructed as it is today. This is a very interesting place for those looking culture and history.Christopher Columbus built the first European settlement in the New World here on his second voyage in 1493, near the mouth of the Bajabonico River and facing the bay of La Isabela, populating it with his entourage of approximately 1,500 Spaniards. Named after the then-Queen of Spain, the archeological ruins of the settlement, now a national park, are still standing in this bay area, including Columbus’s first home, perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and nearby, the first church. Historical records show that the first Catholic mass was celebrated there. A modern version of the church–Templo de Las Américas–was rebuilt and inaugurated in 1994 to mark the 500th anniversary of that first mass. There’s also a museum on-site depicting the Taino inhabitants and the Spaniards’ arrival, as well as other preserved relics.

So, have you ever had a monkey (or several) on your head? Just to be clear, we don’t mean on your back…we definitely mean on your head. Better yet, have you ever fed a monkey a plate full of fruit right before it jumped on your head? If you answered no, then you must take a trip to Monkey Jungle Located a few miles up El Choco road, in the middle of Cabarete and Sosua, Monkey Jungle is more than just monkey’s on your head. It is actually a working farm that just happens to have a 4,500-foot Zip Line with 7 stations that take you flying from platform to platform through the lush canopies of the 280-acre estate. The longest station boast of a ride 800ft long! There is also a free fall fan descender that drops almost 60 feet into an ancient cave. Puerto Plata’s crown jewel attraction offers a day of hiking through thick forest, crossing footbridges and passing numerous flora before eventually reaching a rocky hilltop where you’ll begin making your way down by jumping or sliding down a series of waterfalls
This is a unique place with spectacular views, incomparable tropical nature. Distance from Sosua to Lake El Dudu is 87,5 km, about 1 hour 30 min driving in car. Laguna El Dudu is an exciting and mostly unknown attraction on the north east coast of the Dominican Republic. The lagoon is surrounded by natural cliffs from which to dive in or free fall into refreshing clear waters. Anyone (like me) who has never zip lines and free fall from 10 meters, might need to take a deep breath in order to adjust to this adventurous situation. A visit to Laguna El Dudu can easily be combined with two additional short activities. First there is a small cave system nearby which is fun to explore. There is also a neighboring lagoon with clearer and shallower water, and is a perfect spot for a Dominican hangout.

Playa Diamante is located on the northwestern coast, directly off the highway in Cabrera, this light white sand beach is not what you expect: a river flows so near, it gives the sand a soft, spongy texture, while the sea is a mixture of cold and warm from one end to the other. It’s an intriguing experience, but the shallow waters–you can wade in for miles–make it even more ideal for everyone

The Dominican Amber Museum is one of the most visited places in Puerto Plata. Inside, it hosts one of the biggest resin exhibitions in the Dominican Republic. The country has the most important amber deposits in the world; moreover, blue, green or warm honey colours are unique from this area due to its volcanic activity. Here, you can discover the history of this vegetal-origin precious stone. One of the most important stones of this museum is a 40cm lizard conserved inside a piece of amber. This resin can hold prehistoric fossils of plants and little animals on its inside due to its sticky nature, that turns this stone in subject of study. It is said that Steven Spielberg was inspired by this museum when he was working on his famous film Jurassic Park
