Sand bars make the water very shallow for a long way out. Water warmer than the rest of the lake, because it's a bay and shallow. It's about a 10 minute drive from the cottage.

The Tunnel of trees is a beautiful drive. It goes between Cross Village and Harbor Springs. You could start the day visiting the boutique towns of Petoskey then Harbor Springs. Then drive the Tunnel of Trees to Cross Village. Leg's Inn is a unique restaurant in Cross Village where there is a spectacular view of Lake Michigan. They have great Polish food --stop for appetizers, lunch or dinner!

A pretty drive to see fall colors is on the other side of the Mackinac Bridge. Once you cross the bridge, take US-2 West (watch for sign after crossing the bridge) for a beautiful ride along the north shore of Lake Michigan to see fall colors. US-2 passes over the Cut River Bridge--look for signs. A little roadside park is there to get a good view of the Cut River Bridge.

Sightseeing

Mackinac Island is unique in its charm and beauty. The island is eight miles around and has no cars. It's known for its fudge shops. It can be fun to get free samples at various shops and go to your favorite at the end to buy some. If you like bicycling, you can rent bikes on the island. The scene is much prettier when you get away from Main St. It generally takes about two hours to go around leisurely...stopping along the way....and also stopping to climb the many steps to Arch Rock for the spectacular view. You can get ferries to the island from Mackinaw City. If you book on line, there are discounts available.
