Food scene

Great cosy beach style pub and restaurant but particularly good for families and friends at the sunny outdoor section, right on St. Michael's beach, where you can watch the waves and surfers and the kids plashing in the gentle lagoon. Nice menu and food too.

Overlooking Uvongo beach, this Italian restaurant has fantastic views over the beach and the sea. I'm not a fan of pasta (others say it's great and I love their pizzas) but I always take visiting family and friends here for the seaside setting.

This newly renovated bar and restaurant is part of the small craft harbour ski-boat club, but the public are welcome. It is situated at the Shelly Beach launching and landing site for boats of fisherman, scuba divers and sightseers and it can be very entertaining watching the boats tackle the surf and avoid the rocky outcrops. The food and service is not noteworthy, but the setting is great for a casual bite outside or beer in the airconditioned bar.

Exquisite dishes from Thai specialties to burgers at another level. Sushi that makes me eat sushi. Great setting on St. Michael's beach with abundant lawns for kids to play while you eat, with the beach and pools visible from your table. Tuck shop for informal meals. Great for a day on the beach without the picnic basket.

A bit of a drive out (15-30 min) but in my opinion the best fish on the coast. As they say " it's not just our fish that's fresher, but only batter that's better" and it's true. They also have the best prawns, calamari, mussels, and nice platters. It's called 'On the River' because it is set next the great Umzimkulu river shortly before it joins the sea. I heard it was once a whaling station, there is history photos and info on the walls . The setting is peaceful and tranquil and one with nature. Last time I was there we watched a fish eagle attach a hawk from our table. If someone in the group doesn't like fish there are a couple of other eateries in the complex and they don't mind sharing tables. Only thing is you can't complain about the service, because there is none - it is self service and you have to place your orders and get your own drinks. They do bring the food to the table though, and then you realize it was worth it.

Sightseeing

No holiday on the South Coast is complete without a day trip to Oribi Gorge, just 20km inland from Port Shepstone. Nearly 5 km wide at some points, and over 400 m deep, the Oribi Gorge is perhaps better classified as a canyon than a gorge. The reserve is located at the confluence of the Mzimkulu and Mximkulwana Rivers where aeons of erosion have carved out nearly 30 km of spectacular kloofs and crags, covered with dense subtropical vegetation. The reserve is bisected by a paved road that descends right to the base of the gorge, where it crosses the river and climbs back up the other side. A photographer's and nature lover's paradise, amidst the spectacular cliffs and forests there are idyllic picnic sites and hiking trails, home to 250 recorded bird species, small mammals such as vervet and samango monkeys, bushbuck, reedbuck, blue duiker and grey, and leopards are spotted on rare occasions.  The picnic sites, exciting suspension bridge, and spectacular views of the wildlife, gorge, cliffs and Lehr’s waterfall as all accessible in a sedan. Oribi Gorge is equally renowned for its dramatic scenery as it is for its exhilarating wilderness activities. At Wild 5 Adventures (082 566-7424) you will find: Wild swing – the highest bungi swing in the world! Wild abseil - 110m Cliff face, alongside Lehr’s waterfall Wild slide - spans across the Gorge, 165m above the treetops Wild water rafting – grade 2 to 4 for two to four hours Wild suspension bridge - hover 100m above the Gorge floor On the other side of the gorge, at Lake Eland (039 687-0395) you will find: Zip line – the longest in Africa Extreme Zip – a 1km ‘straight down’ zip line reaching speeds of 160km/h – not for children!
