Poolside

It’s what you discover in your pool that really counts as the poolside gossip…. Today, there are some 40,000 pools within the city limits of Palm Springs, which, astoundingly, amounts to about one pool for every year-round resident (in the winter, the population doubles as snowbirds fly in for the season). When you fly into Palm Springs, the geometry of pool-centric living is clearly laid out below, in the repeating grid of aquamarine rectangles, ovals and odd little squiggles. What is it about the swimming pool that grabs us by the hand and pulls us in? The pool is both entertainment and escape. Under the palm trees, in this desert town built over an aquifer, the symbolism of the pool as an oasis is particularly resonant, not to mention just plain fun to splash and play in under the sun or moon light. See you poolside?

A CLASSIC MOMENT BY THE POOL RECREATING THE ICONIC PHOTO BY SLIM AARONS, ‘POOLSIDE GOSSIP’ By STEVEN KURUTZ NO DOUBT YOU’VE SEEN THE PHOTO. TWO ATTRACTIVE WOMEN SIT IN LOUNGE CHAIRS BESIDE A TEAL-BLUE POOL, LOOKING FABULOUS AND MONEYED. A THIRD, ALL LEGS AND CAREFREE ATTITUDE STRIDES TOWARD THEM WITH A DRINK IN HER HAND. IN THE BACKGROUND IS A MODERN GLASS-AND-STONE HOUSE AND PURPLISH MOUNTAINS. THE LANDSCAPE IS IDYLLIC. THE SUNLIGHT IS HAZY AND GOLDEN. YOU WOULD LIVE INSIDE THE PHOTO IF YOU COULD. “POOLSIDE GOSSIP,” TAKEN BY THE SOCIETY PHOTOGRAPHER SLIM AARONS AT THE KAUFMANN HOUSE IN PALM SPRINGS, CALIF., HAS BECOME AS MUCH A SYMBOL OF MODERNISM AS THE RICHARD NEUTRA HOME THAT WAS ITS SETTING. TODAY YOU’RE LIKELY TO COME ACROSS THE PHOTO HANGING IN SOMEONE’S HOUSE — A PIECE OF HIP RETRO DÉCOR LIKE THE BARCELONA CHAIR OR THE LACQUER PARSONS DESK. TO CELEBRATE “POOLSIDE GOSSIP,” THE ORGANIZERS OF PALM SPRINGS MODERNISM WEEK A FEW YEARS AGO ARRANGED FOR TWO OF THE WOMEN IN THE PHOTO TO RETURN TO THE KAUFMANN HOUSE: NELDA LINSK (RIGHT), WHO OWNED THE HOME WHEN THE PHOTO WAS TAKEN, AND HELEN KAPTUR (LEFT), WHO WAS MARRIED FOR MANY YEARS TO THE MIDCENTURY ARCHITECT HUGH KAPTUR. Hiking

Tahquitz (táw-kwish) Canyon is home to a spectacular seasonal 60-foot waterfall, rock art, ancient irrigation systems, native wildlife, and plants. Located at the entrance to the canyon, the visitor center offers educational and cultural exhibits. The best time of year to visit is in the spring, when the waterfall is going strong from the snowmelt on Mount San Jacinto. And the best time of day is in the morning, when the temperatures are cool. Ranger-guided tours are available, there’s no extra charge and you will get a whole lot more out of it that way. They’ll explain how the Indians used the native plants for food and medicine, plus many other interesting facts about the canyon and Indian life. The fee to go up the trail is $12.50 per person to help the rangers clean up after hikers who can't bother to carry their empty water bottles back to civilization and for maintenance. The canyon has little shade, is somewhat steep and rocky, no restroom facilities and no water fountains. Hikers must dress appropriately for the weather conditions, protect themselves from the sun, carry water and wear hiking boots or sneakers.

MY FAVORITE HIKE IS MUSEUM TRAIL, ABOUT 2 HOURS ROUND TRIP FROM TRAIL HEAD, SO BRING SOME WATER FROM THE EN-SUITE.TO REACH THIS TRAIL, GO TO THE CORNER OF THE PALM SPRINGS ART MUSEUM’S NORTH PARKING LOT, WHERE YOU WILL SEE A SIGN MARKING THE TRAIL HEAD. DON’T PARK IN THE MUSEUM PARKING LOT FOR THIS HIKE, THEY TICKET, TRUST ME ON THIS ONE. THE MUSEUM TRAIL RISES ABOVE THE CITY AND OFFERS SPECTACULAR VIEWS OF PALM SPRINGS AND THE COACHELLA VALLEY. FROM THE PARKING LOT AT THE MUSEUM, TO THE TOP OF THE TRAIL IS A GOOD, HARD, UPHILL HIKE. WHEN YOU FINALLY REACH THE PICNIC TABLES AT THE TOP YOU’LL BE READY TO SIT AND ENJOY THE FANTASTIC VIEWS OF PALM SPRINGS, THE MUSEUM IS LESS THAN 1 MILE FROM OUR HOUSE SO I SUGGEST COMBINING A MID-MORNING CITY STROLL TO THE TRAIL HEAD WITH THE ACTUAL MUSEUM HIKE (2 1/2 HOURS TOTAL), AFTER WHICH YOU CAN STOP AND HAVE A HEARTY LUNCH IN THE VILLAGE AND COME BACK TO YOUR COMFORTABLE SUITE FOR A WELL-DESERVED DIP IN THE POOL, PLAY-TIME AND PERHAPS IF YOU'RE REAL LUCKY EVEN A NAP.
