The Tyrolean capital, which is often referred to as the “capital of the Alps”, offers its visitors an impressive combination of urban culture and high mountains. In just a few minutes you can take the modern funicular, the Hungerburgbahn, directly from the old town up to Austria's largest nature park. At the highest vantage point, the 2300 meter high Hafelekar, you not only get a breathtaking panoramic and nature experience, but you can also enjoy culinary events all year round. The main attraction of Innsbruck is the Golden Roof. The Gothic bay window is located in the middle of the old town and owes its name to the roof made of golden copper shingles. It is worth strolling along the pedestrian zone in Maria-Theresien-Straße with its palaces and shops. Also worth seeing is the Imperial Hofburg, which was built by the Habsburgs. Right next to it is the 600-year-old listed courtyard garden. With the palm house, it offers a wonderful local recreation area right in the center. If you cross the Inn, you will find the oldest district of Innsbruck with its pretty, brightly painted medieval houses on the opposite side of the river. Innsbruck's ski jump on the Bergisel is the sports venue for the annual Four Hills Tournament of the world's best ski jumpers and attracts numerous visitors to the viewing platform with its panorama restaurant. Traditional food such as roasted cheese, cheese dumplings or bacon are worth a culinary tour. The market hall should not be forgotten, where not only regional delicacies such as cheese from the Tyrolean alpine pastures, but also international specialties are offered. Wine lovers get their money's worth at the gastro stands. Trendy scene bars complete the offer and offer Tyrolean beer specialties such as Zillertal beer and Bierol.

Alm Hütten

The Höttinger Alm mountain hut is one of the most popular destinations among Innsbruck residents, perhaps due to the fact that it can be seen while drinking coffee down in the city centre. The hut is located almost 1,500 metres above sea level and offers spectacular panoramic views of the Inn Valley and far beyond. The restaurant welcomes guests such as hikers, mountain bikers and ambitious trail runners and serves Tyrolean home-cooked food on the sun terrace. Hikes and mountain bike tours The Höttinger Alm can be accessed via a number of different routes, for example from the traditional Planötzenhof restaurant located above Innsbruck. The hike from the Planötzenhof takes a good two hours and leads through an extremely scenic landscape. Another starting point is the Hungerburg district, which can be accessed on the Hungerburgbahn funicular or the J bus. The hike from Hungerburg only takes approx. one and a half hours but follows a slightly more difficult trail. The Höttinger Alm also offers simple accommodation: dormitory style rooms with 16 Swiss stone pine beds and a 5-person “Matratzenlager” (a shared sleeping platform with designated bed spaces).

The Arzler Alm is a mountain hut located at an altitude of 1,067 metres above sea level at the foot of the Nordkette mountain range. The hut can be reached via easy hiking trails from Innsbruck and the district of Arzl. The attractive location, short ascent and excellent cuisine make it popular among both locals and visitors, whether as a spontaneous post-work hike or a stop during a longer tour. In summer, guests can sit back, relax and soak up the sun on sun loungers. There are also BBQs on certain days if the weather is nice. The standard menu features tempting dumpling specialities and other delicious dishes. A mountain hut near the city If you want to visit the Arzler Alm, there are a number of different starting points to choose from. One route starts from the Hungerburg district, which you can get to on the Hungerburgbahn funicular from the city centre. The hike up from Hungerburg takes approximately 45 minutes. The hike from Innsbruck (starting at the Löwenhaus restaurant) takes approximately one and a half hours. You can also start from the holiday villages of Rum or Arzl. For more inspiration, take a look at our online map and the hiking tips found under "Summer Sports". The history of the Arzler Alm The Arzler Alm was constructed by the farmers of Arzl, who called it the "Buch und Gruben" (Book and Pit). In 1940, the village of Arzl became a district of Innsbruck and the mountain hut has been owned by the city of Innsbruck ever since. The hut was severely damaged by an avalanche in 1968 but was rebuilt in the same year. The veranda and new bathroom facilities were added in 1969. Since the reconstruction, this popular mountain hut near the city has been carefully preserved and maintained in order to remain one of Innsbruck’s top destinations.

Innsbruck's most famous landmark shines in the heart of the historic old town. The splendid alcove balcony gets its name from the 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles that adorn the roof. The building has reigned over medieval houses and shady arcades for over 500 years. It was built by Emperor Maximilian who very much enjoyed the view: from there he would look down over the colourful hustle and bustle of his city, watch jousting tournaments and be revered from below. The shining golden roof can be seen on entering the historic old town but it is also well worth taking a look up close. The structure below the roof is richly adorned with a wide variety of figures and images, including many curiosities.

The Hofburg in Innsbruck is a residence built and inhabited by the Habsburgs. Originally a castle from the late Middle Ages, it was expanded into a castle in the early modern period and was the seat of the Tyrolean sovereigns as well as the residence of various members of the dynasty until the founding of the republic in 1918. The current state is based on the rococo-style extensions under Empress Maria Theresa and can be partially visited.

This 20-hectare park was once the green oasis for Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Philippine Welser, who designed the Renaissance garden in the second half of the 16th century. The great highlight at that time was the artificial waterfall which, fortunately, still exists! The earliest-known written records from the year 1574 describe fishponds, vineyards, game reserves and greenhouses. A curiosity was the rotunda, in the middle of which was a table which could be turned by water power. The park is the perfect way to end a visit to the Palace, and can also be enjoyed alone. A popular place to relax.

On 26 July 1703 (St. Anne's Day) St. Anne's Column was erected in the centre of Maria Theresien Street to commemorate the liberation of Tyrol from the Bavarian troops. On top of the Corinthian column made of red marble is a statue of St. Mary. Surrounding the column are statues of the Saints Kassian, Vigilius, George and Anne, built by Christoforo Bendetti, an Italian sculptor from Trento.

The Palmenhaus is located at the northern edge of the Hofgarten (royal gardens) and contains 1,800 types of plant. The current building was constructed in the 20th century, and every year a special rarity blooms here: the Santa Cruz water lily. This plant comes from the Amazon, and was discovered by the Austrian botanist Thaddäus Haenke in 1801. Its leaves have a diameter of two metres and are to be found on the edge, forming a cake-tin shape. One can even see them grow when the weather is warm and sunny enough, as the leaves will grow 30cm higher every day. The water lily's flower can reach up to 40cm in height, almost half a metre! it opens only in the late afternoon, is white and has a wodnerful fragrance. At dusk, the flower closes again. On the second day, it turns pink, and on the third, sinks into the water to be replaced by a new flower. This rare spectacle can be seen in the summer months, mainly from June to August or September. Due to its delicate nature, we cannot guarantee that you will see the water lily's spectacle. Simply ask in advance.

The Imperial Gardens are the green heart of Innsbruck. The park borders on the Imperial Palace and is also near the bottom station of the Nordkettenbahnen lifts. Are you looking for a cool place to relax or have a picnic? If so, simply choose a spot on a bench in the shade of the old trees and watch as the world goes by. The Imperial Gardens have existed since the early 15th century. At that time, however, only imperial highnesses, princes and members of the court were allowed in. Even the Habsburg Empress Maria Theresa is said to have done some "gardening" here: she had certain areas of the gardens redesigned. Today, the Imperial Gardens are open for everyone to enjoy. Play a game of open-air chess or listen to music in the pavilion.

The ski jump on Bergisel hill in Innsbruck was rebuilt in 2001. The bridge construction of the in-run, the building construction of the tower and the steel construction of the tower head beautifully combine different fields of architecture. Iraqi-born architect Zaha Hadid is behind this architectural masterpiece. She also left her mark on the Tomigaya Building in Tokyo, the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinatti and the expansion of the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid. Zaha Hadid received international acclaim in 2004 when she was awarded the Pritzker Prize for her work – making her the first woman to receive this award. At the Bergisel Stadium, Zaha Hadid elegantly combines a jump tower, café and in-run to form a striking, signal-like entity, a usable sculpture – and what other city can claim to have such a versatile work of art? The ski jump stands proudly above the Olympic city of Innsbruck on the historic Bergisel. This hill has always been a place of great importance for Tyrol and especially for Innsbruck: around 200 years ago, brave Tyroleans led by Andreas Hofer fought on the hill for their country's freedom. The first ski jump was built on this historic ground in 1925. The sports facility has twice been honoured with the task of hosting Olympic events: the Olympic flame burned on the Bergisel at the Olympic Games in 1964 and 1976. Other major events have also been held at the stadium, for example a Mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II in 1988 for 60,000 followers. The stadium at Bergisel is not only a meeting point for athletes and sports fans in winter, for example during the international Four Hills Tournament. It is also a FIS competition facility and year-round training centre featuring a ski jump with an artificial surface: a special porcelain in-run and a landing area covered in fibre damping mats. The ski jump is the most modern ski sports facility in the world with space for over 28,000 spectators. It is mainly reserved for the "ski jumping experience" but Innsbruck's modern landmark also attracts tourists: it is a great destination for anyone looking for a great view or a nice cup of coffee, as well as techies and architecture enthusiasts. The entire facility, including the funicular, the tower lift, the panoramic café and the viewing terrace on the jump tower, is open to the public daily from 9 am to 6 pm (winter opening hours from 10 am to 5 pm). This attraction is just one of the many sights and services covered by the Innsbruck Card. · Architect Zaha Hadid, 2001/2002 · A hybrid of specific sports facility and public function (panoramic restaurant "Café im Turm" and viewing platform) · Tower with base, "head" and in-run · Combined tower and bridge (91.6 m long, 48.35 m high) · Numerous international awards · Considered a modern symbol of Innsbruck Bergisel SKY restaurant Tirol Panorama Museum and Giant Panoramic Painting

The building that was home to the Stadtsäle city halls until 2015 has been replaced with the new "Haus der Musik" (House of Music). This new building is an event venue and meeting place for artists, students and music lovers. Several institutions have already made themselves at home here, including the Festival of Early Music, the Innsbruck branch of University Mozarteum Salzburg and a state library for music. Several associations dedicated to vocals, brass & wind music and folk music are also located here. The building includes two concert halls and two theatres, as well as foyers and terraces that can be rented for events. Visitors can also enjoy themed cultural gastronomy in a sophisticated setting at the Das Brahms restaurant. The large terrace overlooking the Imperial Palace is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy. The Haus der Musik is also a highlight for architecture fans. The modern building has a large glass front and makes a clear statement that its architecture exists in the present day. The building's façade is particularly special. The way the dark colour of the building takes on the colours around it and shimmers from red to brown to aubergine depending on the time of day and weather, is something you do not see every day. In the evening, the house even appears to come to life as the lights go on inside and the façade becomes transparent. This landmark of urban planning serves as an interface between the Imperial Palace and the Tyrolean State Theatre. The state-of-the-art technology, exceptional acoustics and spacious rooms make the Haus der Musik something truly unique.
