During the mid-1800s, the Epsom Salts Manufacturing Company mined the cave for Epsom salts, and locals used the salts to add pigment to their clothes. The cave was also mined during the Civil War. Soldiers scoured the cave for saltpeter used to produce gunpowder.

Great Summit and lookout at the top! Great hike with breath taking views. We tried to count how many stairs were on the 1.9 mile hike (3.8 mile roundtrip). Guess??? On our hike down we loved splashing in the water and playing on the rocks at the first footbridge near the parking.

Directions:

This is not really a hike, just our favorite stop off Little River Rd on our way to Townsend. Beautiful drop off of the Little River with a cliff to jump off into the deep sink. A must stop if you are in the area!

We have only made it to the actual Falls once because we never seem to want to leave Midnight Hole! At 1.4 miles from the trailhead, you’ll reach Midnight Hole, a six-foot fall drop into a deep plunge pool of exceptional clarity. Plan to get wet and maybe take a jump off with the locals!
Roughly three-quarters of a mile past Midnight Hole, a hitching post clues you in to the side trail leading to a bench that overlooks Mouse Creek Falls. It’s a serene, almost dreamy scene. Mouse Creek tumbles down a two-tiered, 45-foot drop into Big Creek.
Directions: This trail, approx 60 minutes from downtown Gatlinburg, is easy to find via I-40 East. Take I-40 to the Waterville Road Exit #451. Once you cross the Pigeon River, proceed approx 2 miles to a four-way intersection – continue straight. The road will turn into a gravel road and dead-end into the parking area.

The caves have different parts to them and was very interesting. Kids walked out knowing all about stalagmites and stalactites! Would be a great rainy day activity.
