Fresh air and exercise

Do you love walking or biking? (Or cross-country skiing in the winter?) With miles and miles of paths, some for single file walking and some broad fire lanes, you can enjoy many enchanted vistas of trees, grasses, berries and birds. You will be exhausted long before you exhaust all the treasures of this 5000 plus acre State Forest. Sometimes I drive there and park for a walk, but usually I walk the five minutes to the path behind the high school's baseball field and start my walk there.

From my house, it's just over a five minute walk to the YMCA. Check out the offers for swimming/working out. I don't know what changes the pandemic will bring to the summer schedule, so I'll leave the research up to you!

Interconnecting trails leading through woods, near streams and ponds and through glorious meadows -- one of my many favorite year-round walking spots, whether I want a twenty minute walk or a ninety minute walk. If it's tick season, wear light colored clothing, put your socks over your trouser legs, and do a tick check afterwards! People also fish here -- but I'm no help with info about fishing, I am sorry to say!

Yet another wonderful hiking and biking spot, just over the West Tisbury line in Chilmark. Hills, dales, fields, woods, and views to the North and South shores. In one of the fields, in addition to some more large rocks, you'll see the remnants of a 17th century home. The biggest rock, named Waskosim's, may be one of the largest glacial erratics on the island -- we are always happy to climb up it on our way.

Great take out for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

This is my favorite place to get take out food -- simple, nourishing and delish! I usually get the black bean and rice with plantains and mango salsa (my mouth is watering while I type!) but they also have delicious chicken and other meats as well as several other veggie options, such as the cauliflower curry dish. They make great desserts, too!

I used to live on Main Street, right near Waterside, and would walk past it several times every day. There were ALWAYS lots of people enjoying coffees, bagels, sandwiches, soups, salads. . . both inside and outside, eating there and taking out.

Easy beach outing

Bend in the Road Beach is at the Edgartown end of State Beach, and has a lifeguard during the day -- something not easy to find at every beach on the Vineyard. I love it because either there or at State Beach I can always (eventually) find parking. the waves are not crazy (it's the Sound, not the Ocean) and you can swim -- really swim -- far by swimming parallel to the beach if you like doing that. There's lots of families hanging out, swimming, playing, having picnics -- it's a great scene. Plus, you don't have to walk far from your car to get to the beach.

Great movie selections

Sightseeing

Oldest running platform carousel and hand painted ponies -- but what makes it really great is the brass ring challenge! When I was young, I got skilled at picking up four or five at a time; now I'm pretty pleased with two! If you get the shiny brass ring (the last one offered from the ring "arm" ) you get a free ride on the merry go round! There are arcade type games there, too, if you like playing those. The Flying Horses was closed in summer 2020 due to the pandemic. I'm crossing my fingers for summer 2021!

The Marth'as Vineyard Camp Meeting Association is not a place to go camping! Walk around this historic neighborhood and enjoy the most astonishing and adorable collection of small "gingerbread" houses -- Victorian designed houses, each with their own scrolls, curls, hearts, or other decorative details and brightly painted trim.

I think you'll love going to Aquinnah! Shopping in the stores, walking on the beach, looking at the view from the overlook, eating yummy food or getting an ice cream cone -- no matter what, you'll have a great time!

This beach is intended primarily for residents of West Tisbury, but they generously allow the rest of us to come there early in the morning (you must be out of the parking lot before 10am!) or late in the afternoon, starting after 5 pm. Wear your bathing suit and if you go in the evening, bring a picnic because it's some of the best swimming and sunset gazing imaginable!

Another fun outing that's walking distance from the apartment, the Island Alpaca Company is open daily. They have a self-guided walking tour, plenty of alpacas to look at, and a gift shop!

The MV Museum moved into its new digs a couple of years ago. There is more to see than most people can absorb in one visit, so if you can, plan on several visits! They have some permanent exhibits as well as new, shorter exhibits all the time. Because of the pandemic, you may have to book your visit as a particular time slot -- that was the case in the spring of 2021, anyhow. I love the exhibit on the history of lighthouses as well as others I have seen both live and online.

A local/walk-to community art center, under ten minutes away on foot! Check to see what's on exhibit, and what the covid restrictions are. . . If we're lucky, the Tuesday flea market will return this summer, and some art classes as well. The art gallery is free and there's always something to enjoy!

I confess that I've never bought anything here, but I have spent quite a few happy half hours there on many different days over the past twenty something years. I love watching the blobs of glass get heated and shaped -- it's like watching hay get spun into gold!

Food scene

This is a great place to pick up local ingredients as well as off-island produce. Also, they have an amazing kitchen, so if you want already prepared foods and really great baked goods, this is your spot! Pick up food for your picnic or get what you need for your feast! And you don't have to go through downtown Edgartown to get there, which is a real plus if you're here when the traffic has picked up!

I always loved eating here -- during the pandemic I've loved getting take out from here! They have a very short menu, but each item is exquisitely prepared. There veggie options are limited, but their fish tacos, their salmon kabobs and their curried chicken are all sure to delight!
