churches and monasteries

The church "Panagia i Limnia" has a nice bell-tower and is the second parish of the main town. The icons from "Christos sto Kastro - Christ in the Castle" as well as Papadiamantis's head are kept there. The parish of Panagia Limnia continues to preserve the nice tradition and custom of the island, which are vividly represented in the books of local writers-poets Alexandros Papadiamantis and Alexandros Moraitidis.

The church of "Panagia Eikonistria" is the most holy site of the island since the miraculous icon of Virgin Mary (Panagia) was found here around 1650. An important intellectual figure of the island and of the Church, Dionysios the Old, was a monk in this monastery. The "Katholikon" of the monastery (its church) which is honoured on the day of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary each year, is a basilica of one isle with a dome, built in the 17th century. All the interior church has been painted with hagiographs.

The monastery was initially built in 1794 by a small group of monks of the "Kollyvades" movement. These monks were forced to leave Mount Athos, due to the turmoil that existed at the time on the occasion of the day when the memorial services were to be held normally, on Saturday instead of Sunday. The construction of the church complex was completed in 1806 and became the center of the "Kollyvades", both during the dispute and in later times. This spirit of the "Kollyvades", strongly influenced the life of the inhabitants of Skiathos, but also of the Skiathos novelist Alexandros Papadiamantis, as well as the Skiathos writer Alexandros Moraitidis, who at the end of his life took the name of the Lonely Figure and the Lonely Shape and name of Andronikos. The Monastery of Evangelistria helped significantly morally and materially both the pre-revolutionary movements and the revolution of 1821. In it in 1807 the first Greek flag with the white Cross in the middle on a blue background was designed, woven, blessed and raised. In it, Niphon swore the chiefs Theodoros Kolokotronis, Andreas Miaoulis, Papathimios Vlachava, Giannis Stathas, Nikotsaras, the Skiathos teacher of the Genus Epiphanios-Stefanos Demitriadis and many others, after a great meeting that their action plan. Many sacred relics are kept in the sacristy: silver-plated holy glasses, bread-bearers, trays and tweezers, gifts of the same, a silver cross, a six-winged one and three gospels with ashes (one of 1539). In the library are stored patriarchal lead bulls, sigils and letters, 107 manuscripts of the last three centuries, printed books of the 17th and 18th century, letters of Saint Nicodemus of Mount Athos, etc.

beaches

Lalaria (the word lalaria means white round pebbles in greek) is a wonderful beach on the northern island, inaccessible by cars or foot. It's a majestic place as if it's straight out of a fairytale! The daily boat tours from Skiathos Town to Lalaria beach is surely worth it but take notice it will last from morning till the afternoon. You should ask the locals(in front of the boat tours where they sell the tickets) about the weather the night before to make sure your trip will be smooth and not too windy. In this lovely boat ride, you will see the Red Cave, Kaminaki, the Cave of Fonissa, and lastly the magnificent beach of Lalaria where you will swim in its crystal clear turquoise waters under an impressive white arch-shaped rock and next to the ruined Castle of Skiathos.

You can take the bus or drive from Skiathos Town to Koukounaries, on the eastern side of the island. This is the most famous beach on Skiathos: well-organized with sunbeds, umbrellas and watersports clubs, with soft sand and surrounded by pine trees, Koukounaries is a wonderful beach. Although it gets very crowded, it is still large enough for all the visitors. The pine forest around the beach and the close lake provide a nice path for trekking. About 500 meters from Koukounaries, there is another popular beach, Banana, equally organized and beautiful. A small cove of Banana beach is officially nudist.
