Ice Cream Shop! http://shuberts.com/ Begun in 1938 when Leonard C. Shubert left Montana, at age 54, to find a location in California for an ice cream shop. As he drove down the tree-lined Esplanade, Shubert was very impressed with Chico and decided this was where his business could thrive. His nephew, Charles Pulliam, Sr., joined him three years later and eventually bought the business from Shubert’s widow in 1951.

http://treshombreschico.com/ Tres Hombres had its humble beginning on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe in Kings Beach, CA in the summer of 1974 as the Cantina Los Tres Hombres, when three friends from LA decided they wanted to live the mountain life. Skiing in the winter and beach volleyball in the summer, ah those were the days. Alas, all good things sometimes must come to an end. In 1984 the partnership split up and the Cantina was sold. A few years later, in the summer of 1986, one of the original Hombres, Johnny Scurto, was on a road trip and found himself in Chico looking through the big windows of an empty brick building on the corner of 1st and Broadway. He thought to himself “this is a very cool building and could be a very cool Tres Hombres”. He called his former GM, Michael Thomas and the two of them spent the next several months drawing plans and asking friends and family for money. In Oct 1986 the construction and remodel began, turning a once clothing store into a restaurant. The big day finally happened on Jan 7, 1987 when Tres Hombres Long Bar & Grill opened for business, not because they were ready but because they ran out of money and needed to open. Business ran smoothly, growing as the then small town of Chico grew. Tres celebrating its 10th anniversary and its 20th anniversary. Then in the early morning hours of Dec 1, 2009 tragedy struck. A kitchen fire destroyed the back half of the restaurant. The heroic efforts of the CFD saved the more historic front half dining room and bar areas. A long ten month rebuild ensued and with the help of the City of Chico, Tres was able to reopen in Sept 2010 with a brand new kitchen and a front patio dining area, the first in downtown Chico. Johnny & Michael are still partners and along with long time GM Tod Pedretti, work hard to make sure Tres customers enjoy themselves in a cool environment with a “Best of Chico” margarita served up by a friendly bartender. Please come in and say Hi, meet up with an old friend or make a new one.

http://bidwellpark.org/landing-page/bidwell-park-home/lower-park/ One-Mile Recreation Area is located within Lower Park, just a few blocks from downtown Chico and easily accessible from East 4th Street. Enjoy swimming at Sycamore Pool, barbecues, softball, horseshoe pits and more. For those interested in swimming, the Sycamore Pool, located at the One-Mile Recreation Area, is an uncommon swimming experience, being a concrete pool built around Big Chico Creek. Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend each year at the pool. When swimming in Big Chico Creek, be sure to use caution. Water which may appear to be shallow and/or slow moving can actually be swift and powerful. Don’t be a victim! Stay in areas where there is no white water. When possible, swim with friends. Also, as with all other activities, bring enough drinking water to stay hydrated.

http://www.nantuckethomeinc.com/ Nantucket Home began in 1975 after owners Rick and Nan Tofanelli returned from an inspirational trip to the island of Nantucket. They fell in love with the Northeastern folk-art movement and upon returning to Chico, they opened a little store on Third Street in Chico, California. Some might remember the shop as “Nantucket Quilt” where one could find island-made baskets, early American antique-furniture and of course, vintage quilts and fabrics. With an appreciation of the craft of quilting, Rick and Nan began a wholesale division of quilts called “Nantucket Cotton”. The Chico-based textile business was a success and the line was quickly picked up by well-known retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Macy’s and Horchow. Nantucket Cotton’s line expanded to include children’s clothing, holiday décor, pot holders, quilts and travel bags to name a few, and the success of the little retail shop soon forced a big move across the street. The move allowed the businesses to expand in many ways: custom-made bedding became available, there was plentiful space for Rick’s finds of antique furniture, and Nan saw the necessity of an interior designer on staff. After the introduction of custom bedding, came beds, then sofas, gifts and home accessories. Along the way, Rick and Nan decided that their hearts were in interiors. Over the next 30 years, the original hole-in-the-wall store evolved to a full interior design studio, an area rug gallery and a sophisticated furniture showroom. In 2008, Nan took on the renovation of Chico’s original Cadillac dealership to be the ultimate location of Nantucket Home, merging three showrooms into one. Still in the heart of downtown, the 13,000 square foot open-beamed showroom is the perfect organic backdrop for their distinctive product. Offering a full interior design studio, an impressive showroom and as the ideal locale for parties and events, it’s evident that Rick and Nan’s passion for design and love of community can be discovered and shared here at 6th and Broadway.

http://www.ssproduce.net/ In 1967 Rich Stewart partnered with his sister and brother in-law, Joyce and Don Sheffield, and started a small produce store in Gridley, California called S&S Produce. The following year the business moved to its current location at 1924 Mangrove Avenue in Chico, California. As Rich moved on to other ventures, his parents, Roy & Evelyn Stewart, took over the partnership with Joyce and Don. S&S Produce operated as a “roadside produce stand” with a limited selection of natural foods. Over the years the inventory slowly expanded to include vitamins and supplements. The Butcher Shop operated as a separate business, next door to S&S, as did The Deli in an adjoining section. In 1974 Rich became sole owner of S&S and later that same year purchased The Butcher Shop. S&S and The Butcher Shop continued to grow and thrive under the same ownership, but as two separate businesses. S&S started to include a limited supply of natural cosmetics and additional health foods. In 1995 Rich purchased The Deli and continued its long-time tradition of quality lunch meats and sandwiches. On May 13, 1997 S&S and The Butcher Shop physically became one business and a new larger renovated structure was introduced. The new store, S&S Organic Produce and Natural Foods, offered expanded floor space for each department and the convenience of paying for your entire purchase at one set of registers. The store has continued to grow with the addition of health and wellness books, bulk foods, and the outdoor BBQ in 1998. Today, S&S Organic Produce and Natural Foods proudly offers one of the largest selection of certified organically grown produce in the north state. Our produce department is also supportive of sustainable agriculture. We support both small and large family farms that are committed to this practice and carry the freshest local produce whenever possible.
