For generations, the store was family-owned. John Lewis and his wife Shirley ran it for 52 years. Among the store’s illustrious customers, President Jimmy Carter, who liked to go duck-hunting in the area, used to stop in. Pull up a chair by the wood stove and swap stories and tall tales with the local folks and newcomers at the “liars’ bench.” You never know who just might drop in!
