City/town information

Lagos located in western Algarve, has with a long history, as it was the centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery. The Nigerian town of Lagos (the biggest city in Africa, with currently more than 16 million inhabitants) was named after the town Lagos, by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century. Lagos used to be the capital of the Algarve until the earthquake of 1755. The earthquake completely destroyed the town. A fishing town until the 1960s, when tourism developed in the region. Nowadays, the town is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Algarve. Most of the people that live near the coast of Lagos work in tourism or in the service industry. Lagos is located about 90 kilometres from Faro airport. It is the most western large tourist town of the Algarve. Only the smaller villages are located further to the west, until you get to Sagres. Lagos is also the final train stop in the western Algarve, which makes the town easily accessible by public transport. To the north of Lagos are the mountains of Monchique. These mountains shield Lagos from winds and clouds from the north. This is also the reason Lagos is one of the towns in Europe with the most sun hours per year.

GET YOURSELF DOWN HERE!!! We recommend booking though ... awesome fresh sea food at best prices in Lagos. Great and fast service. It's a popular spot with the locals and a definite stop for your stay in Lagos. This restaurant is located at the beginning of Meia Praia, close to the Lagos marina and a 10-minute drive away from the city centre (or make use of the water taxi ... just check on the time for the last ride). You can also walk across the draw bridge. It also offers an "all you can eat" option that includes 4 varieties of fish. All the fish are very fresh.

Referred to locally as Blue Door, this Portuguese eatery serves some of the best fresh fish and seafood in town. The setting is informal (like most top Portuguese restaurants) but don’t let the humble surroundings put you off. The food rarely disappoints, the service is reasonable, and the prices are rock bottom. As one of the most popular restaurants in Lagos, there is usually a waiting time for 20-30 minutes here, so come early.

One of Lagos’ greatest backstreet heroes, Arribale has a simple but winning concept. The majority of their dishes are cooked on a little coal oven right next to the restaurant’s small collection of tables. As the street it’s located on used to be on the old sea walls, there’s a distinct marine feel to the decor, and the staff are always smiling and friendly. Make sure to try the flaming sausage for a starter.

Don’t let Tasca do Kiko’s odd location deter you from eating here. The restaurant’s isolated position behind Lagos’ boatyard is a little out the way, but for some of the best tapas in the local area it’s well worth the extra effort. The vast selection of small plates – fish, seafood, meats, and veggie dishes – make it the ideal place to stop by for a leisurely evening of eating. There are also large plates here, and don’t miss the delicious and perfectly light churros for dessert.

We dream about Cachoa. Fluffy, soft-lit dreams with smooth jazz playing in the background. The food here is so out-of-this-world delicious that we have to hold our hands up and say it’s our favourite place to eat in Lagos. Probably in the Algarve. Probably in Portugal. It’s small, cosy, and there’s a beautiful little courtyard in summer with lights strung up everywhere. Cachoa is in Funchal (which is a short taxi ride just outside Lagos) and a little pricier than the other restaurants in Lagos, but completely worth it. Order anything.

A great restaurant and on everyone’s list – and we can’t blame them. The food here is simple Portuguese cuisine cooked to perfection, by a single chef who manages to keep one eye on his cutting board, and another on the TV. The portions are gigantic and often beat the heartiest of appetites. There is only a dozen or so tables here, and they don’t take bookings past 7pm. Petiscos is the bees knees and they know it. And they’re right to think so. If you love seafood, the cataplana is a must here.

The distinctive coastal features were hammered out by powerful winter storms; this is the Cozinha rock being battered. Turquoise sea waters and golden cliffs make the Ponta da Piedade headland one of the most beautiful natural features of the Algarve Ponta da Piedade is a series of beautiful sandstone cliffs, that are considered as the finest natural feature of the western Algarve. This headland to the south of Lagos has been eroded over the millennia by powerful winter storms to form unique cliff formations, which include sea arches, grottos and smugglers caves. The Ponta da Piedade can be explored from the pathways that cross and climb the cliffs, but a much more enjoyable approach is to join one of the boat tours that depart from Lagos marina, or book a Kayak tour ... we loved doing this!

Surfing

The West coast (Costa Vicentina), north of Sagres, is a big national park. The West coast of the Algarve is full of wildlife and beautiful sandy beaches. The area is protected, which means that there are no (commercial) buildings. You will be surrounded by beautiful mountains. Conditions here are perfect for surfing, due to the big waves from the Atlantic Ocean. That is why the area attracts many surfers. Some of them come by campervan from far away. There are a lot of surf schools here as well. Our favourite beaches for surfing on the West coast of the Algarve are: • Praia do Amado. This beach near the village of Carrapateira is one of the hotspots for surfing in the Algarve. Surfing conditions are excellent, which is why many surf schools travel there daily to enjoy the waves. • Praia da Arrifana. This is a great beach near Aljezur. Good waves, but the beach can be crowded at times. Many surf schools can be found here. • Praia da Bordeira. This is a large stretch of beach in the wilderness, near the village of Carrapateira. Conditions are great for surfing. • Praia de Odeceixe. This beach is near the village of Odeceixe and is famous for its beautiful views. • Praia da Amoreira. This beach is relatively close to Ajezur but is not as well-known as other surf beaches. • Praia de Monte Clérigo. This beach near Aljezur is less crowded than other beaches nearby. It is often described as a surfer’s paradise. • Praia do Castelejo. This is a secluded beach with nice views and conditions that are good for learning how to surf. Go here with an instructor, because there are rocks in the water (that you want to avoid). • Praia do Cordoama. This is an impressive surf spot, which is surrounded by beautiful cliffs. Waves are quite consistent. However, this beach is relatively quieter than the more popular surf beaches.

Surfing is possible on various places along the coast, but especially around Sagres and the West coast. Along the South coast, the more you go East, the smaller the waves become. The beaches in this area are known as a paradise for surfing and windsurfing. The waves are very consistent, which makes it easy to catch a wave. Some popular beaches for surfing around Sagres are: • Praia do Martinhal. This is a popular surfing beach. • Praia do Tonel. This is a beach within walking distance from the town of Sagres. Sagres is at the western edge of the Algarve and is characterised by massive cliffs, raging seas and windswept landscapes. The powerful seas and expansive beaches attract surfers from all over Europe, and this has provided Sagres with an understated trendy vibe, which aligns with the ramshackle appearance of the town. Further along, the coast is the Cabo Sao Vincente, the south-westerly tip of mainland Europe, and is a dramatic but barren region with towering cliffs and ceases winds. The Sagres region is ideal for visitors who appreciate nature's raw power and enjoy outdoor activities, be that surfing hiking or cycling. There is a regular bus service from Lagos to Sagres.

Zoomarine is a wonderful marine park that specialises in dolphins, marine life and tropical birds. In the marine park, there is a diverse selection of activities including dolphin shows, aquariums, and a good water park with slides, wave pools and rapids. The animals of Zoomarine are kept in modern facilities and all are well cared for. The variety of attractions means Zoomarine is ideal for both families and young couples but again has a high entrance. Zoomarine is in central Algarve (40km from Lagos), however transport can be organised. More information can be found on the Zoomarine website: https://www.zoomarine.pt/en/

The Lagos Course The Lagos Course begins with a parkland character. This course incorporates the only two lakes found on the entire site: at the short par-3 third hole and the long par-4 sixth hole. Holes seven and eight immerse golfers into the expansive dune lands on the southwestern portion of the site. The round concludes with a climb to the clubhouse and back into a more parkland setting. The Praia Course The third nine at Palmares presents the golf experience every great designer dreams of having the privilege to create: a seaside landscape with dunes exposed to the elements. The four seaside holes are between the beach and the railway line. The course opens by descending from a parkland setting. The second hole then whisks golfers into the true links part of the course. This dunes character is continued through the remainder of the Praia Golf Course with the closing hole, a strong uphill par-5, rising up out of the dunes through a deep valley to an amphitheatre just below the clubhouse.
