Neighbourhoods

Lots of funny little artisan shops selling all sorts. There’s also fresh fish available every day...freshly caught... and a lobster hatchery that’s worth a look. We’re trying to help the lobsters increase in number and size. Have a walk around the Harbour...past Little Beach and around the boardwalk to the pier.

Amble centres around a proper working harbour which lands fish every day that you can buy...fresh off the boat. There’s a small beach and a wraparound pier walk...head south and there’s a children’s play area beside the sea wall...walk further on and you can get to Hauxley, Togston and Druridge beaches. We’re talking massive expanses of yellow sand ...empty most of the time!! At the north end of the harbour are the ‘Pods’...small strange looking artisan shops...you can buy the yummiest local sausages...crepes...cakes...local cheese...jams...mead...gin...fish..arts and crafts. On a Saturday there is a car boot fair in the summer and a big market on every Sunday all year at the harbour too. Further north there is the Braid...a grassy expanse to walk your dog or have a meander yourself. You’ll see the Marina from there. Walk further north and up the estuary and you’ll reach Warkworth. Must mention Queen Street...our main road which has a diverse range of shops. I often visit other places and despair at the boarded up shops and places for sale...not so in Amble!!

Small village with a great vibe...nice pubs, cafes and unusual shops. There’s a big car park down beside the river...take some chairs and have a picnic and a walk up the river. If you have kids with you it’s a nice place to splash around in and feed the ducks. You can get to the beach...which extends along the estuary opposite Amble harbour...by going over the bridge coming out of Warkworth heading towards Alnwick and turn immediately right and up the hill...park at the top.

People always call this a fish and chippy sort of place...but look closer! A truly lovely harbour where you can catch a boat to The Farnes or Holy Island...The Olde Ship is a great pub...The Bamburgh Castle has great views of the sea...a few gthe fish and chips are good too!! I remember visiting with an old friend from London and having fish, chips, mushy peas, a slice of bread and butter and a pot of tea in a red plastic teapot. She fell about laughing at this very Northern lunch…😂 Nice walk to Bamburgh through the dunes towards the iconic Bamburgh Castle.

This is the beach on the front of all the Guidebooks…the beach with the iconic Bamburgh Castle rising from the dunes. On a foggy day, it’s looks as if it’s floating. Fabulous beach walk…or you can have a look around the Castle. In the summer, it gets very busy and you may struggle to park!!

Sightseeing

Alnwick...Great gardens...cafe and shop...don’t forget to visit the Poison Garden. It has to be said that it’s not cheap to get in, especially with a family....however, you can visit the shop....look through the gate at the waterfalls...visit the Treehouse (fab!) and walk through the woodland for nothing! You can even park for nothing if you use the parking dial and the car park behind the Playhouse instead of paying in their own car park. There’s nothing like a cheap day out!!!

Quirky place for coffee and cakes/sandwiches! This is a private airfield essentially and there’s plenty of places to sit and view the aircraft landing and taking off. It’s relatively new and there are no signs to it...if you put Eshott Airfield Clubhouse into your sat nav it’ll get you there...it’s about 10 miles from Amble off the A1. You can often see small planes and gyros over Amble and this is where they come from. They also have short sightseeing trips and pilot training...all have to be pre booked.
