Neighborhoods

You can reach the cozy town of Montezuma within 5 driving minutes. There you find many restaurants, shops, bars, 2 small supermarkets and the beach. When you take a beautiful 30 minutes walk along the beach through beautiful nature, out of the left side of Montezuma, you reach an amazing and wide beach called Playa Grande. When you walk out of the right side of Montezuma you reach the entrance to the Montezuma waterfall. A 20-minutes hike through the jungle leads to this beautiful waterfall where you can jump into the water. Every Saturday from 10:30am there is the farmers market on the right side of Montezuma right next to the beach. They sell handicrafts, fruits, veggies, and many delicious snacks. During season nearly every day there is a baby sea turtle release at the beach of Montezuma. It's so adorable!

If you want to have more restaurants, shops and places to party you should visit Santa Teresa. It a 30-minutes drive from Montezuma. The sunsets at the large beach over there are beautiful. Furthermore it's a good place to go or learn surfing.

In Cabuya there is one of my favourite natural places, the Rio Lajas. It's a sweet water stream that comes out of the Mountains and leads into the ocean. You can stay in the natural pools and enjoy the fresh water or you take an 1,5 hour hike up to the waterfall.

4x4 car is the best option

As long as you stay on the main roads a small SUV is enough but the fun starts off the main roads. There are beautiful ways through the jungle (e.g. there is a beautiful jungle way to Santa Teresa). Also some parts of the main roads can be very bumpy. My recommendation is to rent a 4x4 vehicle to be safe everywhere.

How to pack for Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a very natural and wild country. For travelling around I suggest to travel light and with a backpack. There are places to wash laundry everywhere. You just need cozy and useful clothes to explore the unique nature of Costa Rica. When you plan to discover Costa Rica during rainy season it is good to bring a rain jacket and dry bag. Also mosquito repellent and a torch is a good idea. In most of the country the temperature is warm but there are some places like Monteverde or up on the volcanos where it's cooler.
