Maria's Cafe

This little bike in the wall was recently mentioned in the New York Times as one of many memorable places to eat for the year 2022. The breakfast tacos are great as well as many of their other dishes. This is a place to definitely try before leaving San Antonio. Don't let the small size or humble location fool you. This is a place worthy of it's reputation. 1105 Nogalitos St. check online for business hours

Neighborhoods

La Casita Azul is located in an up and coming neighborhood with a mix of old and new. Gentrification has changed the style of some homes although some younger home owners have chosen to remodel the homes in keeping with the neighborhood. La Casita Azul is one of those homes which the young owner has chosen to fix up without taking away from its style and charm. The quaint little house is situated back about 30 feet away from the sidewalk and street. The street is a busy one where many people walk the busy street and cars congest at certain times of the day due to the nearby school and highway. People often park on the street in front of the home. That's OK because it is a public street. There is a tow truck company that just opened across the street. It is very busy during the day but quiet at night. The highway is around the corner a block away, so you may occasionally hear a large truck driving past. You may hear an occasional radio playing from someone's yard. The corner Valero gas station attracts a lot of people to fuel up and or stop for a snack and drink. If you arrive rather late, expect to find people still walking around the street. There is a corner restaurant that has been around for decades, Gyros. The neighborhood sports bar is also around the corner. Around the corner from the home is the highway. Quick access to the highway will allow you to quickly catch the sights of San Antonio. Please check out the Guidebook and read the recommendations for nearby eateries. I hope you reserve enough days to catch the best San Antonio has to offer!
The Lonestar District is an up and coming neighborhood that is in the process of gentrification. Many of the neighbors in close proximity to The Casita Azul have been in their homes for most of their life. Some have inherited the family home. A lot of new people from around the country have taken notice of San Antonio and love the close proximity to the river, missions, and parks. I grew up in this part of town. Many things have changed but many have stayed the same. There are a few characters in the neighborhood that are retired and spend their time walking around and meeting up with friends. These guys aren't homeless....lol. If you leave stuff by the trash cans though, they will pick it up. I left a small bbq pit outside the trashcan one day. A former guest to the home left it on the property. I meant to wash it and put it inside but it was gone. Law of the land and neighborhood....you out it outside the gate, you must not want it.

You can ride around the neighborhood to view the beautiful homes in the neighborhood as well as tour some of them. There are also many places to eat down Alamo St. Popular bars like "The Friendly Spot" are a great choice for families to hang out. Got a camera? Get ready for some beautiful picture moments. Mission Concepcion is one of the many missions that are part of the World Heritage Missions Trail. You may be blessed to witness professional photo shoots of Quinceaneras (a 15 year old young woman in a beautiful large dress) or brides during your visit. In the spring, around May or so, graduates use the mission as their background for pictures. Pictures are not allowed during services at this church.

Consejos para la ciudad

Cómo moverse

Via Buses

The bus stops to and from downtown are a few steps from the house. Head north on the bus and you are downtown in minutes. The bus is a very economical way to get around the city and the bus drivers are super nice and helpful. If you ask then how to get to the San Antonio Zoo, they will help you out.

Smiles

People that are from San Antonio are generally nice people. Most love sharing information about their city and will kindly give directions when asked. People here are not typically rude. Most people speak both English and Spanish.
