City/town information

San Donnino has no public facilities such as shops or public transport, so you will need a car to visit the neighbouring towns and villages. The nearest shops are at Barberino, a five-minute drive from San Donnino. These include: • COOP, a small supermarket (closes for lunch from 13.00 to 16.30) • several restaurants (see our list), • a chemist, • a bank with cash machine, • an ironmonger’s, • 2 bars, • a doctor’s surgery, • a post office, • a petrol station, • a tobacconist and newsagent. Barberino also features a 13th century mediaeval citadel, offering stunning views from its pedestrian streets and terraces. A 10-minute drive takes you to Tavarnelle, a larger town with more facilities, including a larger Coop supermarket (open all day and on Sunday mornings until 13.00) and a small cinema. On summer evenings, there are market stalls and activities such as concerts in the main street and square. Italy takes the siesta seriously, so in Barberino everything closes from 13:00 to 16:30 and you will need to plan accordingly. Nearby Tavarnelle does have shops that open all day.

Public transport

There is a good bus service run by SITA from Barberino and Tavarnelle to Florence, and Siena. Since parking can be a problem in both cities, it is well worth considering going there by bus. An inexpensive return bus ticket to Florence includes free cycle hire for the day. Ask on arrival at the terminus in Florence. Tickets should be bought at the tobacconist’s or either of the bars in Barberino. They are not always available on the bus. There is an inexpensive train service from Poggibonsi and Certaldo to Siena and Florence or Pisa, via Empoli.
