Halfway along Via di Gracciano, going down from Piazza delle Erbe, you will find Piazza Michelozzo where the Tower of Pulcinella stands, one of the most famous in Italy. Pucinella, a character from 17th century Italian comedy and also one highlighted in Naples puppet shows. He is known as the "voice of the people". He actually strikes the bell chimes every hour. The Tower of Pulcinella creates a junction which on the right divides again into two in the Ruga di mezzo and the Ruga di fuori, roads that lead to the ancient medieval quarter of Montepulciano. To learn more click here: https://www.borgotrerose.it/en/why-there-is-the-tower-of-pulcinella-in-montepulciano/ THE PULCINELLA TOWER IN MONTEPULCIANO BETWEEN HISTORY AND LEGEND A little bit of Naples in the heart of Montepulciano The Pulcinella Tower in Montepulciano is a still working clock. It is not known exactly why a classic symbol of Naples is located in the heart of Montepulciano, but the stories around this watch are different. According to some, the idea came in the 17th century to a bishop or more likely to a priest of Neapolitan origins. A different story tells that it was chosen as a mask to represent the theater. The statue of Pulcinella certainly makes this watch unique in Italy, The Montepulciano clock and its history The only certain fact regarding the statue of Pulcinella is that it was placed on the tower in an era decidedly subsequent to the construction of the church of which the tower is part. The watch is now electronic, but for centuries it has been wound by hand, The last to have ensured its operation by recharging it every evening was Dino Garbini, who lived for years in the house below the clock tower, with his wife Marisa. Where to admire the Pulcinella clock tower The statue of Pulcinella in Montepuiciano, built in wood and covered in sheet metal, is located on a tower that is part of the church of Sant'Agostino and regularly strikes the hour on a bell. The tower overlooks Piazza Michelozzo di Bartolomeo, the Florentine architect who designed the façade. The place of worship is the result of works carried out between the '300 and' 500 and the facade is in fact a mixture of Neoclassical and Renaissance, and despite being a single building is divided into three horizontal blocks.

Church of St. Augustine is the oldest church in Montepulciano built in the late 13 century As you enter there is a beautiful high relief above the entrance representing the Madonna with St. John the Baptist and St. Augustine. The high relief was created in terracotta by Michelozzo. This church is located in the very small Piazza Michelozzo which is a nice rest stop on the very steep walk up through Montepulciano along the main street, the Via do Gracciano nel Corso. The church is believed to have been completed by 1285 but largely rebuilt in the 15th century.

Food scene

Vittorio, the chef, and his co-chef, Cristiana, have a vision for their their small trattoria: to serve authentic simple Tuscan food made with best quality ingredients. Their fresh homemade pastas are delicious,: ravioli stuffed with spinach and topped with Cinta meat sauce, an absolutey scrumptious zuppa di funghi, the local pici with fresh tomato sauce and basil (al ragu Toscano) and the most amazing gnocchi (so light and fluffy like exquisite pillows from heaven) in cream sauce with Tartufo shaved on top. They also offer bistecca Florentina, cinghale (slowly braised in red wine and tomatoes) and delectable desserts such as this panna cotta topped with cherries. Both the chef and his wife are super friendly and caring. For example the chef comes out of the kitchen to interact with the customers and truly cares about what you think. They do not want to be a fancy ristorante focused on rushing in and out tourists. They care instead about sharing with people basic Italian values of the love of food, quality and simplicity, in a tranquil warm atmosphere. If love home authentic Italian food, Rosso Rubino is as close to home as you can get, outside of the kitchen of your own Mama or Nonna! Reservations a must!
