Fairfax restaurants

We love the sisters that own this family run Italian restaurant. We've been going since before our kids were born. It's the kind of neighborhood spot where you always run into someone you know and the people that work there are like family. They opened up outdoor seating in what used to be their parking lot and they usually have live music on Saturdays. All of the pasta dishes are great but I am partial to the Pollo Alla Sorella. It's a pesto pasta with chicken and walnuts and veggies. I get mine without the meat and with gluten free pasta. The Insalada Mista has an excellent dressing and be sure to get the block of cheese. The bill comes with a fun little surprise. Enjoy!!

note: CASH ONLY Our little hole in the wall family run ice cream shop, Fairfax Scoop, is an absolute must. Hot days and weekends will bring long lines. The Vanilla Honey Lavender was around since before anyone was putting lavender in ice cream and is iconic. The ice cream is all organic and make with local ingredients. My personal favorite is the strawberry. You can literally taste the fresh juicy strawberries in there. They have wonderful vegan flavors and anything chocolate is always a winner.

Fairfax things to do

Set on the grass and also in the trees is the Fairfax Farmers market on Wednesday nights starting at 4. This is just an easy, low-key place to grab some organic produce, and a bite to eat. The Roli Roti roasted chicken truck is THE spot if you eat meat.

To go food

If you come to Marin and don't try Sol Food then you've seriously missed out!! Sol food started as a stand at the San Rafael farmers market about 18 years ago. She was so busy that she expanded to a tiny to-go restaurant. Quickly outgrew that and moved to a larger location a block away. Business just keeps growing and she had to double her size, and open up two more restaurants. One in Mill Valley and the other in Petaluma. To-go food is the core of her business and although I don't have stats on her business I would bet that the Pollo al Horno (baked chicken, rice, beans, salad, plantains) are at least half of her business. It's iconic. While you are at it buy a bottle of the hot sauce. Just do it! They deliver too.

Beaches

Every time we drive out to this beach we trip out on it's immense beauty. It's pristine and never crowded. It takes about an hour to get there on some windy roads. There are no amenities so pack a picnic. I would say that this is a swimming beach but it's breathtaking and a great spot to picnic or stay for sunset.

Bolinas is a town and also a beach. While pretty, the reason for going is to experience the funky hippie atmosphere of the town of Bolinas and to surf. This is the ideal place for surfing and for beginners. If you are new or need gear then hit up 2 Mile surfshop in town.

Things to do outside of Fairfax

Great little hike around a beautiful lake in Ross. About 1/3 of the trail is shaded. The beginning of the trail has a creek that kids love to play in. After your hike be sure to go to Tony Tuttos to grab some pizza for dinner.
