Sightseeing

Stretching 73 miles from coast to coast, Hadrian’s Wall was built to guard the wild north-west frontier of the Roman Empire. Discover the remains of the forts, towers, turrets and towns that once kept watch over the Wall. See rare Roman artefacts, get hands-on in museums and take in spectacular views of the rugged landscape to find out what life was like for the men, women and children on the edge of Roman Britain. Today you can explore the Wall’s rich history and its dramatic landscape best at nearby Birdoswald Roman fort or a little further on at ‘The Sill’ - from there you can walk to Sycamore Gap - one of the most photographed places in the country. Between Lanercost and ‘The Sill’ there are many places to stop and see the wall. Hadrian’s Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Standing proud in the city it has dominated for nine centuries, Carlisle Castle remained a working fortress until well within living memory. It has withstood many sieges, held captive a royal prisoner, and been home to the King's Own Royal Border Regiment. Explore the medieval castle rooms, discover a turbulent history with the exhibition, and walk some of the castle walls. It’s also home to Cumbria's Museum of Military Life.

The beautiful and now tranquil setting of Augustinian Lanercost Priory belies an often troubled history. Standing close to Hadrian's Wall, it suffered frequent attacks during the long Anglo-Scottish wars, once by Robert Bruce in person. The mortally sick King Edward I rested here for five months in 1306-7, shortly before his death on his final campaign. Yet there is still much to see in this best-preserved of Cumbrian monasteries. The east end of the noble 13th-century church survives to its full height, housing within its dramatic triple tier of arches some fine monuments. The tearoom there is great too!

Walton’s Bar at The Crown Hotel, Wetheral A short walk from the house, over the train tracks, to the left and over the rail viaduct and then left over the small bridge in the train station. The pub is just up the road on your right. You will find more classic pub food here. 01228 561 888

The Blue Bell Inn, Newbiggin a couple of villages away, right on the fellside. Robin worked here during his formative years. It is small and traditional but the food Jayne cooks to order is classic, hearty English pub food. The portions are massive, if you manage to do 3 courses please let us know in our guestbook! 01768 896615

Fini’s Kitchen, Willowbeck Lodge, Scotby a short drive towards Carlisle, open for food every evening, and Friday - Sunday for brunch and lunch. They have really good food and source local ingredients, a little less pub-like than the other local options. Worth ringing for a booking as it isn’t massive. 01228 513 607

if you are having a BBQ or heading out for a walk in the lakes and you fancy picking up some great local produce. “Steve’s” is a local institution and we always drop in for a warm steak pie or a sausage roll when we are home - all of these are made fresh in the back. There is often a queue out the door! For fine quality meat in the local area, look no further. Open daily (except Sunday) from 08:00 until at least 14:00.

Football

Check the club website for whether they happen to be ‘at home’ on Saturdays (and a few Tuesday evenings) between August-May. I’d recommend going in ‘The Paddock’ which is a standing only stand, if you prefer to sit the Pioneer Stand will be for you. Don’t expect the glitz and glamour of the Premier League, we are currently ploughing our trade in the English Football League Two, but there is no doubting that an experience of football like this will be memorable!

The Eden Valley, Cumbria

For us, the Eden Valley is the hidden gem of Cumbria. With rolling hills and picturesque villages there are many opportunities to walk and eat. Within walking range, the villages of Great Corby and Wetheral are linked by the footbridge attached the the train viaduct. From Great Corby, cross the railway crossing and take the path on the left. A little further upstream, Armathwaite has two good pubs and numerous trails to walk in Coombs Wood. Lazonby and Kirkoswald are another pair of villages a little further away with plenty of history and a few more good pubs.
