Neighborhoods

Bow is at the bottom of Blanchard Mountain and right off the scenic Chuckanut Drive. Close to so many must-see places in Skagit County, I think it’s the best place to stay in order to be close and accessible to everything. 30 minutes from Bellingham and close to the ferry for the San Juan Islands, you’ll drive through breathtaking farm views and be surrounded by nature.

You’ll definitely want to stop by downtown Edison to browse the shops and get a danish at Breadfarm. I suggest checking it out on a weekend day when most of the shops are open.

Anacortes is an old fishing town and has historic charm. We loved walking Commercial Avenue and had a great view of the sunset from the boat docks.

If you’re able to take a day to venture to the San Juan Islands, I’d highly recommend spending your time on Orcas Island. In my opinion, the prettiest island Orcas has a great mix of nature, shopping and the best views. Make sure bring your patience with you, the ferries are notoriously off schedule, but making a reservation and getting there the suggested amount of time early definitely helps!

Food scene

The best bakery close to the cottage, we love to go for the breakfast danishes and a pack of the Graham crackers.

If you love oysters, this is the place to go. Right up Chuckanut, about 10 minutes drive from the cottage, with a bit of a rock and roll feel, this unconventional oyster bar was delicious. They serve oysters and wine til late but make sure to get there a bit early as the grill closes at 7 PM, and you’ll want some of the fish.

With a bar side and a family side, this is a good option for both families and couples. The service is a bit on the slow side, but the food is great and the drinks are better.

COA is one of the best Mexican restaurants around. There’s a location in Mount Vernon, but I like this one beat because of the huge tree that the patio is built around.

Make your reservation ahead of time because they fill up fast, and for good reason. Everything is delicious but if I had to choose I’d recommend the crab enchiladas or the prawn tacos. YUM.

Shopping

Noteworthy shops that you should definitely check out!
Such a beautiful place, where you can wander through connecting greenhouses, sit in the grass behind the schoolhouse, or find a treasure to take home in the garden store.

A cute shop with boutique offerings. The jewelry and home pieces are definitely worth making a stop, maybe right after you get Breadfarm? They are closed on weekdays, so make sure to check updated hours!

Bellewood has a great store, cafe and tasting room. If you stop in when the distiller is there, you can try their creations complimentary. If you love the Pumpkin Spice liquor in the cottage, this is where you can pick up a bottle. Depending on the season, they have different things going on, but I usually just stop in for the tastings and the peanut butter!

Sightseeing

This flat nature walk was the perfect way to get out in nature with my five year old. We spent an amazing amount of time picking dandelions and wildflowers and making wishes until we decided we were tired and turned back. The views are beautiful and the trailhead is right off the main road.

If you make your way up to Bellingham, Big Rock Garden is a great stop. As a city-maintained park it’s free to get in and you enjoy peace, amazing nature, and beautiful sculpture art. We really enjoyed our time here.

Washington Park is right on the bay and offers a playground, a beach, a covered pavilion, boat launch and plenty of benches to sit and watch the sunset. Watch carefully, you’ll probably see some deer!

It’s on all the lists, and I try not to do big tourist recommendations, but this one is a great one. Hike down to the beach and you’ll be able to see how the unpredictable waves kick up on the bridge. We did some rock hunting and we tried to spot the octopus that is rumored to live in the waters. It’s never been too busy when we’re there.
