For food and other essentials your choices are:
1) PaknSave Kaitaia (25 min drive from the bach, best for big shop, lots of variety).
2) Four Square Coopers Beach - only about 15 min from bach, convenient as it is en route if you are traveling up from Auckland. A bit more expensive and limited selection.
3) On the peninsula at Whatuwhiwhi - small convenience store at gas station. Has essentials if you run out but limited selection.
It is about a 25-30min drive to Kaitaia but this is where you can do a major grocery shop.
