If you are here during the summer school holidays, this place will be busy. If you can, go on a weekday when most kids are at school - the queues will be a lot smaller.

Clancy's is a favourite with locals on a sunday afternoon as the kids can run wild on the field next to the beer garden. Pub meals are good (fish and chips a winner), beers are cold, and there is a great live music scene here.

Hands down our favourite place in Fremantle for the great atomsphere, great beer, fast and friendly service, and good pub food. This place gets absolutely packed and is noisy when full. The rear deck has a sandpit for kids, and the waiter will bring pencils, colouring in pages and chalk for drawing on the concrete.

Beautiful hamptons style beach front restaurant with a beautiful view, amazing food, a great drinks menu. Prices are fairly high, and servings are small, but the quality and taste is worth it I think.

Fremantle is blessed with many great bakeries. This is my favourite. I love the Hannah's loaf which is a traditional sourdough. They have a GREAT range of sweet pastries, as well as savouries, and they make a mean coffee.

Parks & Nature

One of the largest inner city parks in the world, King's Park is bigger than Central Park in NYC. There are many playgrounds, parks and trails through the park. Our favourites are the Rio Tinto Naturescape - which has bushland and nature play areas for kids up to the age of about 12, and the Synergy playground, which is more suited to younger kids and is pretty big. The treetop walk and the boab tree near the war memorial are really beautiful with views over the city. There are cafes and restaurants in the park, or you can take a picnic - either cold lunch or use one of the many free barbeques.

The wreck of the Omeo is just off Socrates Parade and can be seen from the footpath that runs along the grassed area alongside the road. To access it, walk down to the beach near the showers then walk north along the sand as far as possible. Snorkel at your own risk, it is best snorkelled at high tide, low swell and low wind.

Penguin Island is similar in geography to Rottnest, and named for the Little Penguins that are found on it. You can catch a ferry to the Island, or do a sea kayak tour which will take you past a sea lion colony on the way over. The visitor centre runs an information session about the penguins where you will see tame penguins who have been rescued. The may also see penguins under the board walks and stairs and sometimes sea lions beach on the beaches. We saw a pod of dolphins on our kayak back to shore when we did a tour.

I find writing about Rottnest hard as to me it is a quiet famly holiday destination...and I wonder if a day trip is worth it? However, I recently explained this to some lovely Australian visitors and they went anyway, and loved it, and were very glad they did. If you have time (like a couple of nights) consider staying on the Island so you can settle into the peace and quiet and really explore the island. The reefs and turqoise water surrounding the Island really are as beautiful as they look in the photos (as long as it's not too windy). Highlights include snorkelling at Little Salmon Bay on the Pocillopora reef; swimming at the Basin with all the other tourists; riding around the island and forgetting how long it takes(!); spotting quokkas; visiting the bakery; lazing on the beach. The Island has a sad history and a trip to the Aboriginal history museum is interesting. It is embarrassing to say that an area that was a mass grave for Aboriginal prisoners who died on the Island was used as a camp ground for many years. I can remember riding my bike over the area as a child and camping on it as a teen. I was shocked this year to learn this terrible history when I visited, as the camp ground has only recently been relocated and even more recently, sign posted. I am ashamed that our government oversaw this desecration and that I participated in it, although unknowingly. Please don't take our bikes over. The hire is almost the same price as the cost of taking a bike on the ferry anyway.

A great day trip from the beach house - with excellent walk trails, picnic tables, bbqs, a couple of water falls. Wildflowers are beautiful around August/september. Just be aware it is under a flight path so the tranquility is interrupted a bit by constant low flying planes!

The unofficial South Fremantle meeting place. The wholefood cafe is not cheap, but it is good. Most of the store is full of organics, including bulk dry goods (great if you only need a little bit and not a whole packet).

This beautiful organic grocery store is run by our good friends. Their organic produce is second to none, and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. You can have a box of seasonal vegies and any additional pantry items you could want delivered for a small fee during the week. The store is not open on the weekend.

An old favourite - I used to go here with my husband to see live bands when I was just out of high school, and it hasn't changed much. It is a great live music venue - very intimate. Check out the Newport record club on their website - local musicians, including some internationally renowned artists, come together to perform entire albums, from Beyonce to ACDC. The ones we've been to have been fantastic.

Famous all over the world as a live music venue, the Fly by Night has recently moved, which was controversial, but is now in the beautiful old Victoria Hall. The bar and outdoor area are very beautiful. Check out the website for upcoming gigs.
