Wine-&-cheese shop featuring globally accented small plates & live music on a lush back patio .. great food and a great atmosphere ! Much more than food, Bacchanal's is an outdoor music/wine/dining experience. I like to select my own cheeses from the wine shop -- you can also select a nice bottle of wine to be served at your table. The kitchen staff prepares a great cheese plate by adding extras like apricot or fig preserves, nuts, etc. You can also order other food items, as well as wine by the glass if you do not want a whole bottle. Full bar as well. There is no better place to have dinner when the weather is nice.

Tipitina's began as a neighborhood juke joint, established in 1977, by a group of young music fans to provide a place for Professor Longhair to perform in his final years. The venue, named for one of Longhair's most enigmatic recordings "Tipitina," has survived in an ever-changing musical climate . Many of the Crescent City's most beloved artists developed and continue to grace the stage at Tipitina's including Dr. John, the Neville Brothers, the Meters, Cowboy Mouth, the Radiators, Galactic, Better Than Ezra, and Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews.

Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Arguably the oldest bar in New Orleans, this building dates back to 1772, making it one of the few French-built buildings that survived the great fires of 1788 and 1794. Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop was reputedly one of the gathering places for pirates such as the Lafitte brothers and Dominique Youx, when they came up to the city from Barataria Bay. Today, the bar is a regular stop on French Quarter walking tours. Whether you’re on a guided tour or just wandering the Quarter on your own, come down to Bourbon and St. Phillip streets for a taste of pirates, scoundrels, and adventure! One of the oldest buildings still used as a bar in the US.

Bywater's most famous music venue. Thursday nights when righteous-trumpter/bandleader Kermit Ruffins is in town, he and and his BBQ swingers play here; Thursday with Kermit as Vaughan's is a New Orleans favorite. 8:30 PM they say; don't expect shows to start at their clock time in New Orleans, but now that Kermit is a family man, things here tend to start a bit more punctually than they did years ago. Expect crowds and good times. Boiled crawfish or shrimp every Friday. Free Food during Saints games. Following glowing attention in David Simon's series Treme, this place has indeed been discovered by the tourists, but the locals and old-timers don't really care and still show up each Thursdays

The local's bar hideout. Great company, great bartenders, no nonsense (don't bother ordering fancy cocktails here, grab something on the rocks or on tap. Play some pool, shuffleboard or grab a late night snack. Plus good JUKEBOX! Great neighborhood bar, good place to catch a game, good choice of beer on tap, and good bar menu. They also have shuffleboard! They are open for lunch now too, but haven't tried it yet. It's not fancy and cash is the law of the land.

Snug Harbor is a popular jazz club, bar, and restaurant on Frenchmen Street in the Faubourg Marigny section of New Orleans Frenchman Street is the place for live music. Snug is one of our faves. Small and intimate with decent food on site. Our tips: buy tix in advance and show up early to get the best seats in the house which are actually upstairs, first row. The music is clear but not deafening and you get the benefit of great people watching in addition to seeing the musicians. The most sophisticated jazz can be found here on a nightly basis. Looks like a restaurant up front, but has a performance hall in back for serious music fans. Shows twice nightly. The oldest nightclub on Frenchmen

Pat O's piano bar. People may tell you it's too touristy. Well, you're a tourist. And it's a lot of fun. Make sure you make the evening complete and 1) let the photographer take your group's picture. They're pretty good at capturing moments on 8x10 BW glossy prints and you don't pay unless you want to take a copy home. 2) order a hurricane and let the waitress know you'll want to take the glass home as a souvenir. They'll charge you for the glass, and give you a box to put it in. The box makes it a little easier to get it home in one piece when it's late. No trip to New Orleans is complete without a famous Hurricane cocktail from Pat O's! Enjoy the massive courtyard and fountain.

The seats on the lazily spinning Carousel Bar in the Hotel Monteleone are some of the most treasured in New Orleans. Whether hopping on the stool featuring a painted elephant, lion, tiger, monkey or zebra on its backside, patrons know they have entered a wild, and revered, kingdom. If you have the chance ask for bartender Marvin Allen, he can mix with the best of em'. Ok this is pretty cool, its a bar thats built out of a carousel and actually spins around (really slowly) as you sit there. It's usually pretty busy on the weekend nights so I'd try to go during off-peak hours. Have a drink every time it spins around 360.

Brewery that started in one warehouse and grew to cover the block. Nearly endless collection of craft brew, outrageously good BBQ, and ping-pong in the back. Hit up the rooftop patio for the view. Awesome local brewery with a rooftop deck, board games, big selection of draft beers, and live music on many nights. If they have Girl Scout Cookie on tap definitely get a pint. Nice local brewery just down the road. They offer a full restaurant and brewery tours. Sit on the balcony upstairs for great views of the river while enjoying a nice local IPA. They also have live music on occasion.

Theres an entire block of Frenchmen St. here that is mostly music clubs. If you are unfamiliar with the specific bands you want to see, my recommendation is to just walk down the street and when you hear something you like just walk in. Most of the clubs have no cover charge. Maison is one of the bigger clubs on the street and has two stages. If you get a chance I recommend seeing the Brassaholics, they are more on an energetic gogo Brass funk band and they like to do their own version of some classics like Nirvana. Great music venue with two different floors of music and a fantastic balcony for people watching on frenchmen

One of my main go-to places for live entertainment. No cover and the band is always good. The dance floor fills up quickly! Drinks are a little pricey though. Music and a lovely back patio with food! Crawfish depending on the season and other delicious bites! Perfect place for live music any day of the week, prices are reasonable and no cover to get in. There are always good bands playing at this venue, you won't be disappointed for good Orleans music such as Jazz or Blues.

It's a New Orleans insider secret. It's not at all like a real country club, not a golf shirt in sight! It costs $10 on weekdays, $15 on weekends and $8 after 5 p.m 7 days a week. The pool is saline instead of chlorine which makes a world of difference. Upscale and stylish American cuisine at great prices, with dining in a beautiful old dining room or on the veranda overlooking the pool. It's a great brunch place. At 10 dollars (except during high season when it's a little more), the big Port of Call drink with the iconic keeper cup is a steal if you're looking to amble around for adventure. Voted #1 Pizza in New Orleans, Best Pizza in New Orleans, & Restaurant of the Year. Consequently, it is known to get very busy nowadays and there is limited indoor/outdoor seating. New York style pizzas, pastas, salads, and desserts with a frequently changing menu and day-to-day specialties pies. Beer on draft. Voted #1 Pizza in New Orleans, Best Pizza in New Orleans, & Restaurant of the Year. Consequently, it is known to get very busy nowadays and there is limited indoor/outdoor seating. New York style pizza, AMAZING pastas, and a cute outdoor patio. Surprisingly their in-house-made pasta beats almost every pasta place in the city. This used to be a bootleg pizza joint in the bywater. Their homemade food and care earned them a loyal customer base which they leveraged to open this cute place by the river.
Take the time to check out the beautifully restored piece of history that is the St. Roch Market. St. Roch Market was originally created as a state-owned, open-air market on St. Claude Avenue in 1875. After thriving for many years and then barely surviving through the Great Depression, the historic venue evolved into a privately owned seafood market in the late 20th century. When hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, the market was nearly destroyed, as the storm severely damaged both its interior and exterior structures. Today St. Roch Market has undergone complete transformation into a rejuvenated community market place and local favorite for any time of day. A variety of local vendors.

Charming little place with all outside (under tent) dining. It's not cheap but the food is pretty solid, the cocktails delicious and the place has a certain charm. There's literally a tree growing in the dining area. It's also a delightful 20 minute walk or longer depending on how many stops you make to take a pictures or just view some of the most charming historical houses. That alone recommends it. You won't be disappointed. Get a window seat and some moules frites.

A restaurant with character, at Jacques-Imo's you can expect a crowd, and probably the owner walking around, drinking, and socializing with patrons. It's a lively place with some great New Orleans dishes: must-gets include the alligator cheesecake (an appetizer) and the soft shell crab special, if available. A monumental uptown restaurant that serves rich New Orleans fare in a unique, busy setting. Prices are not outrageous, but make sure you arrive early or be prepared to wait.

This is not 'touristy' but well known by the locals so plan on a bit of a wait. No problem, as you can go across the street and grab a bottle of wine and relax outside on beautiful Esplanade Avenue and drink as you wait. My favorite is the paella and their garlic bread is the best. Paella, grilled calamari, crabmeat tropicale, roasted mushrooms, just a great little noisy packed Spanish place...no delivery, no reservations...wine list, but you can bring your own for a corkage fee

Local breakfast and lunch spot with multiple locations around town. The Migas are wonderful. Might have to wait for a table but we think it is worth it. Beloved breakfast spot for many New Orleanians. Food is always fantastic and very well priced. It can get crowded as they are only open for breakfast/brunch/lunch. So expect lines if you sleep in too late.

The blackened redfish and the rabbit and andouille sausage jambalaya are awesome. This bar was home to many locals during the storm, they have famously never closed since Katrina A mixture of dive bar and restaurant, this place is always packed but maybe that's because the food is good and pretty cheap. Don't be surprised if a sing-a-long breaks out if the right song hits the jukebox. This is one of my go-to late night spots. Located in a dive bar, but excellent food. Rabbit Jambalaya, Frog Legs, excellent fried chicken.

CNN.com:Tim Love's top rib joints across the U.S. “the pulled pork and pork ribs were off the chart" We agree. Best BBQ in New Orleans. Heavenly ribs!!! Be sure to order the ribs and the macaroni and cheese. I could eat their macaroni and cheese every day! If you are all eating ribs, sometimes it's cheaper to order a dozen and split them 2-3 ways than to have 2-3 people order separately. It's a good stop for lunch or dinner. Closed on Mondays. Maybe the best BBQ in the city, its been rated top 10 BBQ in the USA a couple different times. My recommendation is the ribs, or any meat combo platter with sides, and whatever drink special they have.

Liuzza's is a great neighborhood restaurant Casual Creole Tavern! My favorite gumbo in the city. Their BBQ shrimp po-boy, slow-simmered corned beef is also very good as well. Though it's in Mid-City, this is one of my favorites and it's a New Orleans local classic. There are about a dozen local, multi-generational restaurants in New Orleans that everyone just cherishes, and Mandina's is one of them. Creole and Italian comfort food. For dessert, walk over to Angelo Brocato's for ice cream. Old world New Orleans with a little bit of Cajun mixed with a little bit of Italian mixed with a little bit of everything. GREAT poboys and daily special dinner plates. Pick up to go or have it delivered. We rec “All that Jazz” poboy, or the “Grilled shrimp poboy with the wow sauce” or the “bacon, egg and cheese poboy” Famous place to get poboy sandwiches to go. Eat them on the sidewalk or take them to the riverwalk a few blocks away. It's a 24 hour convenience store/tiny grocery store with a great grill/kitchen. My favorite meal from here is a french fry poboy and a veggie burger poboy (i eat half of each and save half for later) with some mac and cheese. And a few 16oz drinks from the cooler and a pint of ice cream from the freezer to finish things off. Great place to stop on the way home or to the FQ.

Soul food! The lines can be long, and if you arrive anywhere around noon expect to wait, but the fried chicken is worth it. Also, try the fried catfish if it’s on. 10am-5pm daily, closed Sundays. Lauded family-owned spot since 1957, famous for fried chicken and other soul food in a humble setting. Get the white beans and rice and the cornbread and the rest of the menu too. This place is frequented by locals and visitors and is world renown for its batter dipped fried chicken. It's the best in the city and only my niece makes better fried chicken:-) Please don't be put off by its location - many visitors go there. Parking is troublesome so use Uber/Lyft.

Another great coffee shop. It may be considered a little brighter, a little more spacious than the rest. Street seating is nice too The folks visiting The Orange Couch could not be more diverse and exciting. As far as the coffee, it’s consistently strong, sophisticated, and totally lacks pretense. Good espresso and great chai. If you like chocolate and chai, try the masala mocha. This is a nice neighborhood cafe to hang out at while you drink your latte and tap away on your iPad.

For a true New Orleanian dining experience, you have to try Jack Dempsey's. Good, typical New Orleans fare. If the upstairs is open, grab a drink at the bar and go upstairs to the balcony to watch the sunset or people watch. Overlooks Jackson Square. Sit at the bar and get the Crayfish crepes. While you are there check out the ghost room. They put out bread and a glass of wine every night. Since they started doing that, the ghost has stopped haunting them. A high end restaurant, but well worth it. One of our favorites. Located in historic Jackson Square.

We recommend it because we LOVE it. When you are in the mood for upscale food but don't want to have to dress up. This is a very fancy restaurant but casual dress code. Besides amazing food they have a great cocktail menu and happy hour as well. Genuine "Delmonico" bone-in steak, aged. Plus terrific steakhouse sides

Emeril's banana cream pie blows my skull. Sit at the bar and have a glass of champagne (with pie) or make a reservation and do the whole special deal. The venue is snazzy-modern--a renovated pharmacy warehouse in the heart of the Warehouse District. Pricey, but hey Emeril Lagasse is world famous for a reason. Emeril Lagasse's flagship New Orleans Restaurant. I also recommend Delmonico's, another of Emeril's restaurants. Reservations required. Great food, Emeril LaGagasse is famous and you can say you've been there. Down side - the acoustics are not good. It gets very loud so don't count on a quiet atmosphere.

If you're looking for something fancy for dinner, a white napkin restaurant is just a block away. I recommend the oysters St. Charles and also the crab cakes. Great cocktails and wine selection, too! Great food and a fantastic jazz trio that performs 7 nights a week. A perfect spot for live local music with your dinner. Better atmosphere than the famed Acme. Same oysters from the same distributor but with more classic diner feel. I love it and have spent several visits at the bar with a few dozen and beers. Our favorite place for raw oysters in the FQ, across the street is the more famous Acme Oyster House, there is usually a line, but it's seriously the same thing here at Felix's. Classic but simple seafood in the French Quarter. Across the street from Acme Seafood.

Authentic New Orleans cooking done the way it was hundreds of years ago. Our guests have most often chosen this as their most memorable meal. Home of Chef Paul Prudhomme, godfather of cajun cuisine, this restaurant is a New Orleans institution. Must Try: Blackened Drum and Bread Pudding with Hard Sauce. Frenchmen Street If it's music that you crave or just a peek into the New Orleans way-of-nightlife, then Frenchmen Street is a must see. Known as the "locals' version of Bourbon," Frenchmen is an entertainment district located in walking distance from our house and offers an amazing variety of venue styles and music ranging from traditional jazz to blues to reggae to rock. Many clubs along the strip don't even charge a cover! But in true New Orleans fashion, do give a cheer after a great trombone solo and throw a few bucks in the tip jar to show your appreciation. Entertainment street has morphed over the years on this stretch of Frenchman Street from Esplanade and ending at Royal Street.

Designed by renowned architect Emile Weil and built in 1927, the Saenger Theatre’s interior re-creates the ambience of a 15th century Italian courtyard and gardens, complete with a starlit evening sky ceiling, arched surroundings, statuary, columns and decorative moldings. Located on the corner of Canal and North Rampart streets in downtown New Orleans, the Saenger is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Once the flagship of Julian and Abe Saenger's empire of dozens of theatres nationwide, today it is one of only a handful of Saenger theatres that remain in operation. This renovated theatre is one of the best venues for great live theatre in the city.

Go to Jackson Square where you will find The Cabildo. This elegant Spanish Colonial building is neighbors to St. Louis Cathedral (another beauty) and houses many rare artifacts, like Napoleon's death mask. The building also once served as the center of New Orleans government before becoming the headquarters of the Louisiana Supreme Court where Plessy v. Ferguson was decided in the year of 18something. Its current purpose is to educate folks about Louisiana history, so check it out. Located in Jackson Square, the Louisiana State Museum located in the Cabildo displays three floors of exhibits concerning Louisiana's history, Hurricane Katrina, and additional changing exhibits.

Located in the French Quarter, It is widely believed to be the largest and most diverse pharmaceutical collection in a single location in the United States, containing old patent medicines, books, and pharmaceutical equipment dating back as far as the early 1800s. We found this really interesting. Interesting way to gain a better understanding of the history of medicine. The museum is in some old doctors house which he practiced out of and includes all sorts of artifacts. First licensed pharmacist in the U.S. And also the birthplace of the Cocktail.

Truly unique southern living exemplified in style on immaculately kept grounds. This amazing formerly private estate has a gorgeous home built to become a museum and showcase the spectacular gardens! Tucked away in nearby Old Metairie, this gem of a time capsule is almost exactly as it was when the inhabitants lived there. The gardens are exquisite and if you were hoping to do a Plantation tour, this is a half or even a quarter day's worth of your time and easily accessed. So worth it. The estate is stunning! Long Vue House and Gardens is a city estate with a Classical Revival-style mansion surrounded by eight acres of drop dead gorgeous gardens--actually there are 14 garden areas on site.

Drugstore right around the corner in case you left something at home. Also sells alcohol. We love to shop local, but in case you need a pharmacy or regular supplies - this is your place. About a 5 minute cab ride. Toiletries, milk, alcohol, etc. You can walk a little further to go to a supermarket or food coop but usually guests just go here because its so close and they have some easy food items like cereal, frozen food, etc.
