My favourite nightclub in Edinburgh. It's a cool, younger scene with House/ techno music. There is a bar upstairs and a nightclub downstairs. It opens until 3am in the morning. [During the Fringe Festival it stays open until 5am]. Website: http://www.thecabaretvoltaire.com/

A more upmarket cocktail bar. Very trendy and picks up after 5pm when people finish work. There is also a nightclub downstairs from this bar, which opens at 10pm and closes at 3am (5am during the Fringe Festival).

Cocktails? You must visit the Voodoo Rooms. That's all I'll say on that... http://www.thevoodoorooms.com/ I recommend you book a booth in the bar. It gets very busy and it's especially nice to have a place to sit at a table.

Food Scene

If you like Mexican food, this is the place to go in Edinburgh. It's a family-run business, popular with locals and tourists alike. If you like it hot - try the El Diablo burger!

Fancy a romantic dinner - then definitely book a 'window table' at this 4th floor restaurant around sunset. You can the Edinburgh skyline as the sun sets. After dark, you can appreciate the castle all lit up from a rarely seen angle. Website: https://www.harveynichols.com/restaurant/edinburgh-dining/

Edinburgh has several Michelin Star restaurants, several are down at 'The Shore' in Leith. Leith is famous for being the location of 'Trainspotting.' It's much less bleak nowadays... actually very trendy and a fantastic day out. These restaurants in Leith are also cost effective, compared to the city centre ones. Sightseeing

Get a sense of Scotland's history at one of the most iconic castles in the world. The Castle acts as the backdrop of Edinburgh's festivals and Hogmanay fireworks extravaganzas. It's an active military base and houses war memorials as well as Scotland's National War Museum. Everyday (except Sundays, Christmas Day or Good Friday), crowds gather to enjoy the firing of one of the Castle guns. The firing of the One o’clock Gun dates back to 1861 when it allowed ships in the Firth of Forth to set the maritime clocks they needed to navigate the world’s oceans. It's been known to freak out uninitiated tourists walking along Princes Street below... See: https://youtu.be/NZ5UaWe5DcE

Scotland's modern parliament is a tourist attraction as much for it's unusual architecture as for it's fascinating history. There are tours within the building should you be interested in Scotland's governance, history and culture. More info: http://www.parliament.scot/visitandlearn/24228.aspx

Parks & Nature

Get away from the hustle and bustle of city life by taking a casual stroll or hearty jog through The Meadows. If neither options piques your interest, take the picnic basket (with grass blanket) with you to chill in the sunshine/ moonlight over a glass of vino. Great place to splash some sunshine on your face (summers only, dare I say), meet interesting folk or for a quite romantic afternoon. Note: During summer, The Meadows enjoys fun fairs, food festivals, Edinburgh Fringe events/ attractions, sometimes Cricket matches. Try find the weird exercise machines in the middle of nowhere...

Play on the world’s oldest short-hole golf course [for free]. A wonderful free activity to do all year round is to play golf on Brunstfield Links. Believed to be one of the oldest sites of golf (pre-dates 17th century), the current short-hole course was founded in 1895. There are two courses available to play on. A summer short 36 hole course (open end of April to September) and a 9 hole winter course (October to end of April). Should you need to hire equipment, visit the Golf Tavern on the edge of the links. You can hire clubs and balls for £3.50 (April 2015) which is very reasonable, plus they do a great range of offers to play, eat and drink (pitch and pint £6).

Looking for a bit of nature, fresh air and a trip to the Stockbridge area of the city? Why not go for a walk down the 'Water of Leith'? You can walk all the way down the river to Stockbridge. On Sunday there is a market where soaps, cheeses, and that kind of stuff is on sale. More interesting is the restaurants and bars. Fettes College is also in the area' a little known fact is that Fettes College was the inspiration for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter books. James Bond 007 was also "attended" the school [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fettes_College#James_Bond].

Feeling adventurous? Like hiking? Want to conquer an extinct volcano? Arthur's Seat is where you'd like to be... It's not for the faint-hearted. Wear hiking boots (or take extra care in your street shoes). I highly recommend you ascend and descend the safe way and avoid the paths with the vertical drops along one side of the hill. Seriously, people fall off the cliffs on a regular basis - ain't nobody got time for that! More info: https://www.earthtrekkers.com/arthurs-seat-volcano-edinburgh/

Entertainment & Activities

There has reputedly been a pub on this spot selling liquor and victuals since 1360. If this foundation date was proved correct it would make The Sheep Heid Inn perhaps the oldest surviving licensed premises in Edinburgh, if not Scotland. There is also an old fashioned bowling alley, built around 1870, which is reputedly the last such alley in Scotland. Expert tip: go here after a hike up Arthur's Seat... Then get a taxi home.
