If you have a car and feel like venturing out from St. John's, thisplace by the beach (most beaches in NL are pebble and rock beaches) has great fish and chips and a lovely view of the bay and Bell Island - a nice place for a day trip but you'll have to plan for it as it involves a ferry ride.. They have outdoor tables or you can eat inside if the weather is not favourable. It's usually busy, so be prepared to wait up to 10 or 15 minutes for a table.

Sightseeing

A twenty minute drive from St. John's. You can hike on part of the East Coast trail, which passes through this spot. If you do, please, please, please obey the signs to stick to the trail. There are sheer drops to the ocean and in the spots where you can access the shoreline, rogue waves take tourists off the rocks and into the ocean to their death every summer. It's perfectly safe if you stick to the trail and heed the signage. You can also visit the town of Petty Harbour on the way here or back. While there you could stop at Chafe's Landing for fish and chips. Depending on the time of year, you may need a reservation. There's also a great little cafe called waterShed Coffee Shop. They are only open in season , so it's best to check them out on facebook before you go to confirm they are open.

The views on the way and back from this place are quite lovely. About 20 minutes from downtown St. John's. If you have more time, continue on to Flat Rock and Pouch Cove at the very tip of that part of the Avalon Peninsula. Stop at the Traditional Coffee House and Deli for lunch or a sandwich to go. There are lots of lovely spots to have a little picnic, including Middle Cove or Torbay beach. The East Coast Trail is also accessible from several points in this area. The Torbakery, in Torbay, has great bread and baked goods.
